Scarlett packs thelast of her clothes into her bag and looks around the bedroom. She had planned on staying here for another few days, but without Nick, the place just feels too empty. She’ll spend the day as planned, watching crappy Christmas TV, then head back to her flat in Dublin in the morning.

She’ll still be alone there, but it’s better than being alone here with all the memories.

She’s being absolutely ridiculous, she knows that. She was with Nick for a grand total of three days. Of course nothing else was going to come of it. How could it when he’s Santa? It kind of puts up a slight barrier between them. Scarlett wanders back downstairs again and stands in the middle of the living room, looking at the pile of books she brought with her to read. She had a crazy holiday fling with Santa himself. There’s nothing in those books that could possibly come close to that.

‘Get a grip girl. It was three days of hot, steamy, fucking amazing sex, followed by a terrifying demon fight. Move on.’

She grabs a bottle of wine and a glass from the kitchen, and slumps back on the couch, staring at the fireplace. A knock at the door a few minutes later has her jumping to her feet and rushing over to open it. ‘Oh. Reve. It’s only you.’

The Sandman grins at her, stepping inside when she moves aside. ‘Wow! That’s one way to bruise a guy’s ego. Thanks.’

‘I’m sorry. I didn’t mean that the way it sounded. I just thought...Never mind. My imagination is running away with me.’

He sits on the arm of the chair and brushes a hand over his close shaved hair. ‘I’m sorry, Scarlett. He’s not coming back. He’ll be asleep by now.’

She shrugs and sits back on the couch. ‘I know. Ignore me. So, is everything okay outside?’

He nods. ‘All good. I’ve taken over from Flint. You’ve got me for the next few hours. Just shout if you need anything.’

‘Thanks Reve. I think this is all overkill though. I’m sure I don’t need you guys to babysit me.’

‘You don’t say no to Nick when he decides something. He tells me to be here, I’ll be here. Same goes for the others.’ He gets up and stretches. ‘I’ll leave you to it.’

‘Stay in here. Please. I don’t want you freezing your ass off outside. You might as well keep me company. You can protect me even better from in here.’

‘If you’re sure?’

‘Sit. Please. Wine?’

He shakes his head. ‘I’m on guard. Drinking won’t help me look after you.’

‘Good point. Do you mind?’

‘Go for it. After the few days you’ve had, you could probably do with a drink.’

‘You can say that again.’

Reve takes the couch, stretching his legs out in front of him the same way Nick did when he sat there.

Cursing herself, she picks up the TV remote, flicking through the channels for something to fill the silence. She may want company but she’s not in the mood for conversation. All she wants to do is drink her wine while watching something that will, hopefully, distract her from thoughts of Nick.

Whether thanks to the drink, or the old comedy she found to watch, Scarlett drops off to sleep, thoughts of Nick entering her dreams. Then he’s suddenly replaced by Reve.

‘I’m sorry for crashing your dreams but you need to wake up.’

‘I do? Why?’
