I unfolded my wings and kicked off the floor, the dagger awkward in my hand as I reached both arms out to snatch Kai off the floor.

He realised what I planned and leapt for me without question, outracing the black stain by millimetres. Kai slammed into my body, expelling all my air, but I clung to him and flapped my wings frantically to keep us in place.

"Is that … wind?" Harvey asked, crouching on the windowsill and trying to figure out the latch.

"There's no escape," Wynvail said gravely, strapping weapons to himself.1

"Oh, shut up," I snapped at him. His defeatist attitude wasn’t helpful.

"He's a titan; we can't outsmart him, we can't outrun him. He wins every time."

I laughed, opening my mouth on a dismissive insult—

"Keep your mouthshut,or he'll slaughter you and all your mates. And I meanallof them."

That snapped my mouth closed, panic for Wane carving through my chest. I dug my fingers into Kai’s back, holding him bruising my tight as I flew in place. The black spot began to devour the sofa.Still there, everything out back, weird

"I'll do the talking," Wynvail added, but he didn't look happy about it. "I've negotiated with him before."

For what?I began to ask, but the wind Harvey had felt whipped suddenly sharper, slicing through my feathers and sending me into a spin. I shrieked, crushing Kai to me and frantically flapping my wings.

The pit in the rug ripped further open, the wind blasting from it like a tornado now. It snatched Emlyn where he hovered by the door, his arms open to catch me. It tossed him right into the pit.

A broken sound ripped from me when he fell out of sight.

"Em!"I screamed so loud my voice broke.

No.Not again. Not again,please.

I didn't realise I'd said it out loud until Wynvail repeated, "Let me do the talking. I'll get us out of this, Halwen. It won’t happen again. I promise you."

And the crazy bastard leapt willingly into the pit.

I tried to fly across the living room to Harvey, still clinging to the window. But it was like the titan knew my plan, because the wind whipped into a frenzy and the force of it ripped Harvey’s hands off the latch. The window flew ironically open. Too late to save him.

He was sucked into the darkness, swallowed so suddenly that I couldn’t see him anymore.

Not again. I can’t do this again, I can’t…

Kai's added weight in my arms must have made us harder prey for the blackened pit, but it tore at us fiercely, forcing us lower.

"I love you," I told him, shaking all over, remembering a moment exactly like this. I'd told Wane I loved him then, and we'd been blasted apart by a shotgun.

"We arenotdying," Kai hissed, his arms bruising my waist and his expression furious. "Not this time. I fucking swear to you."

Tears gathered in my eyes, prickling and sharp. I barely managed to nod before the wind roared, knocking us out of the air and sending us in a brutal plummet into the hungry maw in the floor.

Blackness consumed everything.

But then a voice shook through the pit, and I felt it down to my trembling bones.

6

You betrayed me,an awful, grating voice filled every space in the blackness around us, tearing through every one of my senses until I wasn't sure if I held Kai anymore. I couldn’t see a single thing around us, the pit as dark as a void, but wind battered me from all directions. And all for your mate?

I ducked my head, wishing I could slam my hands over my ears but too scared to drop Kai. The voice was as deep as a migraine, but as raw as a touched nerve. Pain tore through my head and I clenched my jaw so tight my bones creaked.

Pathetic.
