‘But you haven’t touched your wine, and we haven’t finished.’ Disappointment was etched across his face.

She knocked back the contents of her glass in several gulps.

‘My gran is staying with us because she flooded her house, and thanks to this and all our other clients, Mum is running ragged. I only said I’d be gone for half an hour and I’ve just realised it’s later than I thought.’ She stood up to leave. ‘I can email you the rest.’

‘When do you intend to start? Will I see you tomorrow?’

‘I … I’m not sure. I’ll let you know.’

‘Call me? You have my number now.’

‘You’re so right. I definitely have your number. Thanks for the wine. Good night.’

She grabbed her coat and threw it on and then she hurried to the door. Once outside she took several deep breaths and tried to calm her wildly beating heart.

‘For someone who is supposed to be in love with that man’s brother, you’re making a complete fool of yourself over Grifforde bloody Betancourt, Grace Eversley,’ she chastised herself.

‘Grace?’

She almost stumbled as Griff said her name.

‘What?’

‘We are still friends, aren’t we? I … I haven’t blown it completely, have I?’

‘Erm. We’re as friendly as we were,’ she said.

‘Hmm. I’m not sure what that means but I’ll take it for now. Let me walk you home.’

She snorted a laugh. ‘I live there, in case you’ve forgotten.’ She pointed to next door.

‘I haven’t forgotten. But statistics show that people are often attacked outside their homes.’

‘Well that’s a cheery thought. Thanks for that.’

They walked the few steps in silence and he stood behind her as she opened the pink front door.

‘I’m glad your parents have retained the pink all these years,’ he said.

‘Me too. Well, good night once again. Thanks for walking me home. Get home safely.’

‘Pleasant dreams, Grace.’

‘You too.’

‘Grace?’

‘Yes.’ She held the door open.

‘In spite of everything, I enjoyed today.’

‘I … I did too.’

She stepped inside, closed the door behind her and leant against it.

Hope popped her head out from the sitting room. ‘So if it wasn’t a date, why did he walk you home?’
