‘Do you have ladders?’ she continued.

‘In my bedroom? No.’

Grace tutted. ‘Ladders so that we can reach to hang the decorations. Or preferably a scaffold tower for the Great Hall. That ceiling is exceedingly high.’

‘I’ll ask the staff.’

‘If not we’ll have to hire them. Not a problem because we use them frequently, but if you have some it will save time and money because like everything and everyone at this late stage, most things and people are already booked up.’

‘Send me a text,’ he grinned.

‘Make your own notes. It’ll be easier and quicker.’

‘Are you always this bossy?’

‘Is it a problem?’

‘No.’ He cocked his head to one side and said in an extremely sexy voice, ‘I rather like it.’

‘Don’t be a jerk. I don’t have time for you to practice your flirting.’

Griff snorted a laugh and gasped in mock horror. ‘Practice my flirting? I don’t need to practice, Grace, believe me.’

‘Places to go, people to meet.’ She turned and walked from the room.

She did believe him. The effect he was having on her was more than a little disconcerting, and he wasn’t even trying to charm her. No wonder all those women he had brought to the Mistletoe Dances over the years always looked as if they were in love with him. They probably all were.

Griff had followed her out into the hall. ‘Is everything running to schedule?’

‘I believe so. I need to bring some decorations and bits and bobs here tomorrow. Will there be people to help unload them? I can get them all loaded at my end but Mum, Dad and Hope all need to be elsewhere tomorrow. Hanna’s offered to help. You’re paying her by the way.’

‘Happily. Cash, I assume?’

‘That may be how you pay for most of your women, Griff, but we professionals take cards. Wait. That didn’t actually come out the way I meant it.’ Grace laughed, as did Griff. ‘And, she might prefer cash. Although naturally, we’ll invoice you for all the additional spending on staff etc.’

‘I’ve paid the invoice your mum sent today, by the way.’

‘Thank you. Right. I must get on.’

‘Need any help?’

‘Weren’t you going to make some calls about white poinsettias?’ Grace threw him a reprimanding look.

‘I was. I am.’ He turned on his heel and walked towards the sitting room.

‘No point in having a list of things to do if you then forget to look at it.’

‘Yes, Mum.’ He glanced back at her and winked.

Grace bit on her bottom lip and watched him stroll into the sitting room and then she let out a wistful sigh.

She had spent just two days with Griff, and she was already missing him simply because he’d gone into a different room. If she was like this after just two days, what would she be like by Christmas Eve?

She had been tempted to ask Griff this morning if Bianca would be joining them but she knew how he felt about his step mum and it was probably a good thing the woman wasn’t around.
