“Tell me then.”

“Our night together was… intense.” That’s an understatement . “You made me feel things I wasn’t ready to cope with, David. I wanted you to bare my body, but you did more than that.”

And I plan to do it again. “I felt the same way, Ella.”

“I’m not that same girl anymore… now… now I have priorities.”

“Guess what?” I reply, not backing up a single inch. I like this. Staying so close to her that her chest heaves against mine and her perfume surrounds me. “I’m not that same man anymore either. The note you left, baby… you also gave me more than I was looking for. That night…”

She laughs a little. “I wasn’t looking to get pregnant. That waswaymore than I was looking for.”

“We used protection,” I say. “I’d never be so careless.”

“I wasn’t looking to trap you. You can ask for a DNA test if you want to.”

“Trapping me?” This time I back up a little just to see her jade eyes. Her panicked jade eyes. I wouldn’t dare to force her to endure a genetic test when I already know the answer. “The guy you knew nothing about? Seems like I trapped you, gorgeous.”

I drop a kiss on the line of her jaw. Then another down her neck, she smells fucking delicious.

“Do you feel this between us?” I whisper against her skin. “This is bigger than us. Undeniable.”

“This is just wrecked, David,” she replies. “Don’t come here like a thief to steal….”

“You can’t steal anything that is already yours.”

Mine. And I’ve finally found her. All I hear chanting in my brain is, she’s mine.

“Anyway,” she says, her hands on my chest, pushing away from me. “Davi will be here in a few minutes.”

“We can go as slow as you want.” I walk to the breakfast bar where the water bottle is waiting. I need a big gulp. The urge to drive to the closest liquor store and buy something stronger, claws at my skin. I breathe while twisting the cap, and slowly exhale. I won’t fail. For her. For my son. I don’t deserve anything, but they do. “But this, between us, is happening. You’d better get used to the idea.”

She stares at me a bit open-mouthed.

“May I use your bathroom? I need to change.” She nods and points to a hall on the other side of the room. “Just let me run to my car to grab my duffel. I have a situation in my pants to deal with before he gets here.” And the worst part is I’m not just talking about the paint stains.

Damn it.

Chapter Five

Melanie

I walk around my home as my heartbeat thunders in my ears. Just to give my hands something to do, I tidy up a little bit. I’m nervous. Edgy. And filled with lust for a man that could wreck my entire life. A man who’s currently stripping in my bathroom.

When we left this morning, we were in a rush, like almost every day. Davi always takes so much time to finish his breakfast—he talks too much—and then makes a fuss to get in the shower without his dinosaurs.

My home is small, but it suits the both of us perfectly. You can tell a kid is living here as soon as you cross the threshold. There is a yard at the back with a big tree where I plan to build a fort for my son.

What does David think about the house? I spin in a circle, taking everything in. Does he think it is a safe space for Davi?

It’s cozy. However, it’s far away from a millionaire’s home. Where does he live? I’m sure it is a hot single’s pad with a giant TV hanging from the wall and a game room bigger than the kitchen.

Why am I thinking about this so much? Why do I care about what he thinks of my home or how he lives?

It’s nuts. But I do care.

I’m fucked already, and he just got here.

I have little time to keep torturing myself because David comes out of the bathroom, and my jaw drops to the floor. Let me tell you this. The man rocks his chinos but dressed in jeans and a simple short sleeve Henley – the man looks edible. He has changed in the last several years. His muscles ripple under the cotton fabric, and my fingers are itching to be reacquainted with those hard lines again.
