Happiness is evident in her tone when she replies. “David… that’s not necessary. I got this.”

Stubborn woman. “I know you do.” She’s capable of providing for my son and herself. That’s how amazing she is. “But I’m here. You’re not alone anymore.”

“Ok,” she lets out a sigh. She knows she won’t win this argument. “We will be ready and waiting for you.”

“See you in a bit.”

While driving to my rental home, I give my assistant a call. Stage two of my plan is on: and yes, I had everything to do with Melanie’s fast job offer. I called the camp’s director, offering her a huge donation for a sports program under Melanie’s supervision. The woman was too happy to put her grubby hands on the money to argue with me. They planned to bring Melanie to the team as an assistant, testing the waters before putting her in charge. Melanie is amazing. That trial was bullshit, and soon enough, the whole camp will witness it.

Davi gets bored while we wait for our food to arrive. Taking one of the paper placemats, I start folding the sheet in half. My son’s eyes don’t miss a single movement of my fingers.

“Whatcha doing?” he asks me with curiosity.

“Patience, my son,” I reply. Then another fold. I’ve done this so many times I can do it almost with my eyes closed. It all started when I caught chickenpox at school. None of my siblings got it before, so I was confined to one room while recuperating. I was a handful, and after a couple days, I was bored to death. Then my grandfather came to visit us, and patiently, he taught me how to start doing origami.

At first, I didn’t pay much attention, but then he started more complex creatures. Not just the basic plane or ship. Frogs, a dolphin, a fox. I was a boy enraptured by ancient Japanese art; it was a discovery for me. I forgot about it after finishing high school, but on all those lonely nights at the rehab center, I rekindled my old hobby. It helps me to think.

“I know what it is,” Davi cries a couple of minutes later when I’m about to finish.

“What?”

“A dinosawr.”

“Let’s see if you’re right,” I tell him before bending one of the animal legs.

Davi is on his knees, trying to get the best view of what I’m doing. I try to hide as much as I can. I can’t wait to see his face when I finish. I chose this specific animal because it’s funny. He will love it.

“What do you think?” I place the piece on the table and push the tail, making it jump.

“A frog!” Davi cries, and at the same time, Melanie laughs in delight.

The night has been amazing. Every moment I spend with them is amazing. Tonight is special, though. Tonight we are out celebrating as a family for the first time.

“Mommy, look! Jumps!” Then he uses his index finger to push the tail of the little frog to make it move.

Davi cries with delight as the animal starts hopping around the table. I take my own placemat and start folding again. A crane, my favorite.

“When I am big, I know what I want to be.” As the proud father I am, I’m ready to puff out my chest. Of course, my son wants to be like me.

However, Davi himself bursts my bubble, saying out loud: “A frog!” Then jumps out of his chair and around the table. Melanie immediately takes care of the situation. Carrying Davi back to the table.

“Ok, little frog,” she says while caressing his face lovingly. “You need to stay still. We don’t want them to kick us out of the restaurant. I’m hungry.”

A couple of minutes later, our waitress comes with a huge tray full of dishes filled to the brim with pancakes, fried chicken, and waffles. As we start eating, the conversation shifts to more serious subjects.

“I’ll be in charge of the recreation activities three days a week and helping the other instructors the rest of the week,” Melanie says with a dreamy voice. “They hired me to do something similar at the program I follow with my students at the middle school. The sessions will be longer, which is good. But the groups will be bigger too. Mrs. Reynolds said I would have two assistants. Apparently, some old attendants are now working as a part of the team.”

“Seems like you have everything under control, baby.” I give my soft drink a gulp, understanding why Davi loves this place too much. The restaurant isn’t fancy. Old wooden round tables with mismatched chairs and checkered tablecloths, the entire space is filled with the kind of atmosphere that invites you to stay, eat, and come back again. The food is simple and hearty. This place serves the best fried chicken I’ve had in a long time. If not, ever.

“This is my shot, David.” Her hands are under her chin, her green eyes shining like never before. She looks gorgeous. I want to pull her to me and kiss those smiling lips.

Davi is sitting between us, but the table is small, so I can reach Melanie’s hand if that’s what I want. And believe me, I want to, so I do. Entwining our fingers together, I give her hand a soft tug. The urgency to get lost in the bottom of a vodka bottle is gone, but I’m addicted to the softness of her skin.

“You won’t miss it,” I tell her. That’s the reason I made this easier for her. Melanie is freaking amazing. I’m a fucking goner. Totally whipped.

Every time she moves, the neckline of the tight top she’s wearing gives me a hint of her cleavage. I want my face buried in the junction of those fantastic tits. My tongue is ready to savor those nipples that are always hard as diamonds when we are together.
