“Champagne?”

“We are celebrating,” he replies, and my forehead wrinkles with worry. David had been sober for years. My man knows me too well, though. “Just for you.” Then I notice a chilled bottle of sparkling water in front of his dish.

“It’s too early for champagne, isn’t it?” I say as he places the long glass in my hand. It’s cold and crispy, delicious.

Yes, we have a lot to celebrate, and I’m not just talking about the huge gift David gave to me. It’s him. The gorgeous man who is all my dreams and hopes. Everything he does for me, for his son, daily. Little touches here and there. The way he takes care of Davi, the way he cherishes his son. The way he loves me. All in, with no boundaries.

“It’s five o’clock somewhere!” He sips his drink without breaking eye contact. “I have a gift for you.”

Is there more? “David, you made my dreams come true. That’s enough.” What am I saying, enough? That’s more than that. “Sorry if I’m acting like an ungrateful receiver, but you have done so much for me. You love me as much as I love you. That’s the best present you could ever give to me.”

“I do love you,” he replies. “You know that, but this is different.”

Then he busies himself looking in the inner pocket of his suit jacket and places a black velvet box in front of me.

Ahhhh, now I understand. And I’m not falling for the same trick twice. My kinky man wants to play. I’m more than open to the possibilities, we tried it before, and I came harder than ever.

“Is this step two?” I ask him in a sultry voice, caressing the top of the box with the tip of my finger.

“What are you talking about?”

“David, we have played this game before.” He laughs, remembering the last time. “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.”

“Open the box, Melanie,” David says, gesturing to the little velvet package with his head.

“Ok, bossy pants,” I mumble, and my mouth drops open as I take the gorgeous pinkish stone twinkling so fiercely with the sun’s rays that I’m almost blinded. “Oh, my God, David.”

He has moved and is now at my side, on his knee, taking the gorgeous ring from its box. “Melanie,” he starts, and I gaze from the jewel to him. “We have talked about the past and overcome it.”

That’s true. Fighting an addiction is a war that never ends. David says he feels stronger every day, and I can see it. His demons are still there, but he has learned how to make his peace with them. Life is full of changes, excitement, full of love. None of us want to miss a single minute being lost.

“You’re my future, my love. You dragged the drapes back and brought the sunlight into my life. I want to grow old with you and know you want the same. I love you more than anything in this world and can’t wait to make more babies with you. To raise a family with you. So, I’m here, begging you to please make me the happiest man alive, say you will marry me.”

Tears are flowing freely down my cheeks. I take my napkin to dry them, babbling about how beautifully he made everything for me.

“What do you say?” he asks me. I’m unable to speak, so I give him a nod. Relief washes over his face as he rises from the ground to slide the ring on my finger. I’ve never seen anything like this before. It’s different, dazzling, and big.

“I hope you approve,” David says, pointing at the stone in my hand.

“I love it. What is it?”

He sits on the other chair and drags me with him, so we are in a close embrace while looking at the most perfect ring ever. The Art-Deco halo around the central gem is a work of art itself. “Padparadscha sapphire,” he explains. “When I was looking for the right ring for you, I found this jeweler in Santa Monica. I told her you like lotus and unusual stuff. She came with this. The name ‘padparadscha’ is as unique as the stone. It’s derived from the Sinhalese wordspadma radschen, which means lotus blossom.”

I can’t help it. The waterworks start again. He’s not just gorgeous but so freaking romantic. I’m a lucky bitch to spend the rest of my life with him.

“Are you hungry,” I ask, looking at his gorgeous dark eyes.

Ah, dang, he knows me too well. My man knows I have something in mind. “Making plans of your own?”

My hand wanders across the skin his open shirt leaves unclothed. “You know I love you. And I’m grateful you took care of all this just for me,” I start kissing his neck. He’s tanned from spending so much time working outdoors. “You know… I was thinking on stage two….”

Something big begins to get hard under me.

“I’m ready if you are.”

I’m so ready. A bright, exciting future awaits us. Life is an adventure, and I can’t wait.

Starting now.
