Char rolled his eyes, then dropped his gaze back to his phone as though bored with our conversation.

Good.Nothing was coming of it.

Hayden came back in, a box in his hands. He held it out to me, and I took it out of habit.

My gaze went to the present, which made no fucking sense.

“What is this?”

“You need them, right? I went to the store last week.” He looked so damned proud that I just kept moving my gaze between the box and the idiot in front of me.

“We picked up tampons when we were at the store already,” I reminded him.

“I thought more might be better,” he said, hesitation in his tone implying he might have caught on that it wasn’t the best idea.

“Do you think they’re flowers or something? What’s next, you’re going to put them into a bouquet?”

Sure, Iknewhe’d been trying to help, but the absolute idiocy of him took me by surprise enough that all I could think about was how stupid he really was. How was it that he’d managed to be so successful if he was this horrible with women?

Then again, it must be nice not to have to worry about such things. It was easy for him not to know about things like periods or walking at night alone or any of the bullshit I had to think about. How unfair was that?

A hand wrapped around my wrist, and I cut a glare in that direction, expecting it to be Hayden trying to apologize. What was next? He’d gift me with birth control like they were mints?

Except, golden eyes met mine. Tor tugged softly until I got to my feet. He took the tampons and shoved the box at Hayden’s chest, then pulled me from the living room.

I had no idea what he was doing, yet I wasn’t sure I cared. I hurt and I was still tired and feeling like I had to take care of Hayden annoyed me. Tor guided me down the hallway, but he passed my room and took me to his. We passed by his bed, which reminded me of the first night I’d slept here, when I’d spent the night right there, in those blankets.

He’d been so scary back then, an unknown I didn’t trust. How things have changed.

We went into the bathroom, and Tor released me to place the stopper in the tub, then turned on the water. He felt the temperature, fiddling with the handles until he seemed to find it perfect.

After that, he opened the cabinet beneath the vanity and pulled out a wicker box filled with bath items. He took a round purple bath bomb, tore open the plastic and tossed it into the water. It fizzed as it dissolved, the water turning a soft purple while the scent of lavender filled the room.

He gestured at the bathtub, then walked out, closing the door behind him.

Was that it?

He was always quiet, but that unnerved even me. Obviously, he wanted me to get in, but was that really okay? In his bath? My heart raced at the implications of getting naked in his space, and at least it helped me not think about the pain at all.

Instead of fighting it—what was the point for that?—I did as he wanted and stripped down. I set the pile of clothing on the counter, then stepped into the water. It was only about a quarter filled, and the heat soaked into my skin immediately.

I eased down, having to acclimate to the temperature, and by the time I finished, the bath was about halfway full.

Steam filled the room as the water ran, and I had to admit, the baths here were nice. I’d mostly taken quick showers, especially because I hardly got enough time to myself to even hope for something relaxing like a bath. Instead, I’d jump into the water to wash off beforesomeoneneeded me.

Despite the fact I felt safe with these men, I didn’t really feel all that relaxed.

My eyes fluttered closed as I leaned back, the water just high enough to cover my breasts now. The bath bomb had changed the color enough to obscure me, which made me feel more at ease.

A tapping next to me made me jump, and when I twisted, I found Tor crouched beside the bathtub.

I wrapped my arms around my chest, especially since sitting up had meant the water no longer covered them. “What the hell!?” I asked.

He turned his head slightly, as if to show he wasn’t looking at me, then tapped against the tub ledge again to bring my attention there. A small plate with pieces of chocolate sat there along with a cup of something warm.

“Is that regular chocolate?”

He pulled a wrapper from his pocket and held it up, pointing to the place where it said ‘sugar-free.’ The fact he thought about such things warmed me more than the hot water, honestly.
