Then I saw him, sauntering down the hall toward me. His hands were in his pockets, highlighting his powerful shoulders, pushing up his jacket so I could see the lean taper of his waist.

“Where did you go?” I asked.

“I wanted to put together a nice date for us,” he said with a smile. “I promise, we won’t be alone.”

“No?”

“You know what I am now,” he said. “So you know I have some money.”

Why did that feel like an understatement?

“I have a lot of questions.”

“And I have answers.” He held out his hand.

I sighed and took his hand. His palm was warm and firm, slightly calloused. I breathed in the spicy, addictive scent of his aftershave. “You’d better.”

His answering smile crinkled the corner of those intense blue eyes.

“I’d better go change,” I said.

“You’re perfect the way you are,” he promised me.

I glanced down at my joggers andThe Sound of Ust-shirt. “Now I know you’re lying to me, Greyson.”

He laughed and pulled me out into the hall. “Just get your purse.”

Evening was falling as we walked outside to where a nice car was waiting. I glanced inside at the driver, and my stomach dropped at the thought of how much wealth was on display. Why was this gorgeous, well-off man so interested in a girl like me, who didn’t have anything special to offer? “Is this your idea of staying in public places?”

“I promised we wouldn’t be alone.”

I hesitated as Greyson pulled the car door open for me.

“Kennedy,” he said gently, his voice low and sexy, traveling right to my spine as if his hand had caressed my lower back. “Do you know I would never hurt you?”

“I don’t,” I reminded him.

But I had a feeling.

“What can I do to make you feel better?” he asked me. “Do you want to carry a knife? A gun?”

“No.” My eyes had gone wide, and he let out a soft chuckle, as if he appreciated my innocence. I looked up at him, reminded once again of the height difference between us—and the ninety pounds of pure muscle he had on me. “Also, I saw you fight with Carter and Jack. I don’t think I’d have a chance even with a gun.”

“You’re always safe with me,” he promised, touching my cheek tenderly before tucking a strand of hair back behind my ear. “I’d kill myself before I let someone hurt you. I’d kill myself before I’d ever hurt you.”

“Why?” I whispered.

“Because it feels like I waited for you all my life,” he told me. “Do you believe in soul mates?”

“No.”

“That’s alright.” His answering smile was so confident and magnetic that it made the words convincing. “I’ll believe for both of us.”

I was suddenly keenly aware of the fact we were standing outside my crappy apartment building, with people doing double takes at this handsome man in the suit and the fancy car.

“We’re about to get carjacked,” I said with a smile. “Get in the car, Greyson.”

“You need a nicer place,” he told me, as I slid into the car seat. He glanced around at the dingy surroundings before he swung into the seat beside me.
