I paused, in the midst of drinking my morning smoothie, and then put the cell phone down on the kitchen table and pushed it across to Carter. “Does that seem like the voice of our least favorite former wing?”

“Jealousy and angry accusations? Yep,” Carter answered.

Jack leaned over Carter’s shoulder to read the text. “At least we have his number again for when he inevitably tries to get Kennedy away from us, like the possessive psychopath he is.”

“He thinks you’re the psychopath,” I reminded him. “You’re the one who killed for her first.”

“As if you all weren’t jealous that it wasn’t you,” Jack said. “We’d all kill for her in a heartbeat.”

“She can’t exactly know about that, can she?” I demanded. “As far as she knows, we’re just the assholes who won’t answer any questions.”

I reached for my phone again.

But Jack had already grabbed it. He was typing.

Give her an orgasm?

No response.

“What’s wrong with Kennedy?” I demanded as I got my phone back from Jack. “God damn it, why antagonize him? He’s already both petty and murderous. You could just leave him alone.”

Jack didn’t look apologetic. He just shrugged. I’d have accused him that this was all just a game for him, but I’d seen what he’d been willing to do for Kennedy.

“I’ll find out where she is,” Carter said.

“If she ever finds out you’ve got a tracker on her car,” I reminded him.

“She’s not going to find out.” Carter was already pulling out his cell phone and clicking away to dial in her location. “But you know Greyson will take her from us if he gets the chance. I’m not running the risk that she just disappears one day and we never see her again.”

“Because he’s going to take her in the Civic,” Jack said in disbelief. He pointed out the window. “He’s going to take her in his private jet, take her to his mansion, he’s going to give her all the shit we should be giving her, but with us, she’d be with men who are actually sane and law-abiding citizens—”

“Mostly,” Carter interrupted.

“Whatever,” Jack said, throwing up his hands. “I can’t do this, that’s all I’m saying. You’ve been keeping your distance, but I can’t fucking do it—”

Carter was on his feet so fast the table legs scraped across the floor with an unholy squeal. “I never wanted to do this! I was never on board with making her disappear!”

“You agreed to it! To keep her safe!”

“I’d do anything to keep her safe!” He raked his hand through his hair. “Then the second she comes in the door, you two are ready to abandon the plan—”

“It doesn’t work anymore. Not now that Greyson’s found her.”

“God, you know Greyson. He was never going to stop searching for her. And if he’s found her, then what if whoever tried to kill her before finds her now too?” Carter demanded.

We’d hidden her from Greyson, but more importantly…we’d hidden her from the people who tried to kill her.

We’d started half a dozen rumors back home about what happened to her. The fact her stepfather and mom had disappeared had made it easy to pretend they’d all skipped town. But just in case someone ever found a body—or pieces thereof—we’d scattered other stories around, too.

“Guys,” Jack said urgently, his face worried as he gazed over Carter’s shoulder. “Kennedy’s searching too.”

My heart dropped. “Where is she?”

“She’s gone back home. She’s at the trailer park.”

Ten minutes later, we were all in the car.

I drove like a bat out of hell.
