Convenient.

Anger…and frustration were coursing through me, and I clenched my fists, wanting to scream. The last time Kennedy had been threatened…we’d had to let her go.

"We’ll keep you updated on the investigation," one of the officers said as he and his buddy got back in the cruiser. The three of us watched them drive away before any of us spoke.

“I can’t let her go,” I blurted out, starting to feel light headed at the thought. I sank into a crouch, my hands over my face. “I can’t do it.”

It was selfish of me. But I wasn’t sure I’d survive without her this time.

In fact, I knew I wouldn’t.

“I can’t let her go either,” said Sebastian quietly. I glanced at him, a little surprised he was agreeing with me. His eyes were blazing, fists clenched at his sides.

“I’ll kill anyone who tries to take her away this time,” said Jack, determination laced through his words like I’d never heard before. We both glanced at him. His jaw was set, and there was a coldness in his eyes.

“We can’t protect her while she’s in that shitty apartment,” mused Jack, running a hand through his hair.

“So we get her out of it,” I said.

Sebastian’s voice carried in the night.

“By any means necessary.”

Getting ready for my date with Carter was turning out to be more nerve-wracking than I had anticipated. He had asked me to dress up, and I'd spent hours rummaging through my closet, trying to find something that felt suitable. But everything I owned seemed either too casual or too…poor.

As I sighed in frustration, the doorbell chimed. Before I could get to it, Carrie unlocked it and walked in, holding a garment bag.

“Impatient much?” I teased.

“You know it,” she said with a wink. Her eyes sparkled mischievously as she handed the bag in her hands to me. "I brought you something.”

“But it’s not even my birthday,” I quipped, a little joke we had between us because Carrie’s love language was gifts. Shelovedgiving and getting gifts.

Even when it wasn’t a birthday.

I unzipped the bag to reveal a stunning fiery red dress. It was sexy. The kind of dress I'd always admired on others but never dared to wear myself. The fabric was silky and draped elegantly, with a plunging neckline and a daring thigh-high slit.

"I can't wear this," I protested, my fingers running over the smooth fabric. "It's too...too sexy for me. I’m going to look ridiculous."

Carrie raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms. "Kennedy, when are you going to realize how fuckinggorgeousyou are?" she asked, her voice filled with genuine concern. "We can’t walk five steps without some guy trying to dry hump you. This dress wasmadefor you."

I bit my lip, feeling a mix of insecurity and gratitude. Carrie was the kind of friend that everyone searched for. And I wasn’t sure how I’d gotten so lucky to wake up, in the darkest moment of my life, and find her there. She’d always been my rock, and I’d do anything for her.

She stepped closer and gently placed her hands on my shoulders. "Kennedy, I just want you to be happy," she said, her voice softening. "Carter obviously sees what everyone who meets you sees. You’re something special.”

Tears welled up in my eyes as I looked at my best friend, my heart overflowing with love and appreciation. I sobbed and threw my arms around her.

“Yes, yes. I know I’m the best,” she murmured, but her voice sounded a little choked too.

I let her go and took a deep breath. "I’ll wear the damn dress," I said, my voice steadier now.

She gave a fist pump. “That’s the spirit. My girl’s gonna get laid!”

“Um—”

“Did you or did you not get tongue fucked in a locker room last night?” she crowed.
