Wrecker

I sat next to Candy as she slept and healed and slowly cleaned her with a bowl of warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Fortunately, she was just badly bruised. There didn’t appear to be any broken bones. The best news was that we may have rescued her before she’d been raped. I prayed that it was true.

There was a soft knock on the door before a petite woman entered the room. Chastity was Saint’s old lady and she had a heart of gold. “How is she?” she whispered.

“Resting. She doesn’t appear to be injured too seriously.” I replied as I removed the dirt on Candy’s thin arms. She needed to eat more. To be loved and spoiled like she deserved.

Chastity stood there watching me for several long moments before saying anything else. “You love her.”

I blinked up at Chastity in surprise. At first, my instinct was to deny what she said, but then I realized I couldn’t, I didn’t want to anymore. “I do. I have for a very long time.”

“Does she know?”

I looked down at Candy’s bruised face when I saw that her beautiful eyes were watching me. “She does now,” I whispered as Chastity quietly left the room.

“You love me?” Candy asked in shock.

I nodded as I continued to wash her skin. “I have loved you from the first moment I saw you but I was from the wrong side of town. You were full of sunshine and sweetness and I couldn’t bear the thought of dimming your light with my darkness.”

“Plus I’m the Sheriff’s daughter. Lot of good that did me. Did you ever think that maybe what that young girl needed more than anything was to share her light with the bad boy who could leave her tongue tied with a smile?”

Her words left me speechless. I didn’t understand what she was saying. “Candy… you deserve better than me. I’m a biker in the club that your father hates. I’m not a good man. I reside in the darkness. I’ve done bad things and will continue to do bad things.”

“What better man than the one that saved me? Not even my father did that. Has he even tried to see me while I’ve been here? Who is the one that is sitting here, washing the dirt off of me? While I was unconscious, did you leave my side at all since you brought me here?” Her questions pierced the wall around my heart. As she reached up to caress my cheek, I felt my resistance crumble into dust.

I stood up and leaned over her, my hands resting on either side of her head. “I won’t ever be able to let you go, my sweet Candy Cane. Once you let me in, you’re mine always. Are you okay with that?”

Candy’s smile in spite of her injuries melted my heart. I was hers, I would always be hers. Her hand curved around to the back of my neck as she pulled me down closer to her. “You are the man I’ve always wanted. No other man was good enough. You are the wrecker of my heart. My dark hero.” Those last words were whispered against my lips before I claimed them. Her lips, her heart, her everything was mine, and when she was ready healed, I would claim her completely.

Candy

Moonlight shined through the window and softly illuminated Ezra’s sleeping face. His face was soft and at peace while he slumbered. I didn’t know how this could be real. I fought against the fear that I was still in the place, hanging from the ceiling. As if sensing my fear, Ezra’s arms tightened as he held me close.

I’d been healing in his room now for over a week. Ezra, or Wrecker as he was known, took care of my every need. He even talked to the principal at my school to let her know what happened. She provided me with all the time I needed to heal.

Ezra meant what he said, once I decided to let him into my heart, he was my man. In truth though we really didn’t know much about each other. So we’d spent time just learning about each other. Instead of being turned off by the darkness in his life, I found myself wanting to heal him and provide him with love and hope.

I thought back to earlier in the day. Ezra had gone to my apartment to get what I needed. After he left, Saint came to see me. I knew he would want to speak with me. I was the Sheriff’s daughter after all.

“Candy, you’re looking much better. How do you feel?” he asked as he sat down.

Growing up I had heard about the evil of motorcycle clubs. As I got older over and over the name Saint was spoken as if he were the devil himself. I could see this man could be cold and heartless. I also saw this man was loyal to his family. “I am doing much better. Ezra, I mean Wrecker, wouldn’t let me out of bed otherwise I would’ve come to thank you and your men for saving me.”

Saint chuckled and nodded. “I understand completely. The men of the Dragon Skulls work hard, play harder, and love and protect fiercely. Above anything else we expect and value loyalty. To betray us means death. Your father is not a friend or ally. Being with Wrecker will mean being against your father. Do you understand that?”

I spent a moment thinking about his words before I answered. “My father and I have never been close. We have dinner occasionally but that’s the limit to our relationship. When I was taken, it was in retaliation for his betrayal against the cartel. He is not a good man or an honest one. And while I won’t be the one to turn against him by turning him into the law, I can swear that I’ll be loyal to the people who risked their lives to save a woman they didn’t know and the daughter of a man they saw as an enemy.”

“My woman is like you, she was the daughter of a man who betrayed me, a man who was an enemy. It will make her happy to have another woman here.” Saint smiled as he stood up. “Welcome to the Dragon Skulls, Candy Hall.”

“Wait, is that it? There’s no secret pledge to the dark arts or anything?” I wasn’t sure if my questions were serious or in jest but they made Saint laugh. His laugh was a great sound that I knew was rarely heard beyond these walls.

“All that remains is for Wrecker to claim you officially at church. We voted before bringing you here but the final decision was mine. My word is law and as long as you are loyal to me and to the Dragon Skulls you will be welcome as family, as one of us.”

“So I can continue to work as a kindergarten teacher? What about my apartment? Can I still have dinner with my dad?”

Saint chuckled as Ezra walked into the room. “Most of those answers will come from a discussion with your man here. As for the Sheriff, that’s your choice, just remember what I told you.”
