I escaped into the river and stayed here, going where I wished and stealing what I needed, and that’s why I’m here today.

There are so many occurrences happening around this city. I hear screams and shouts. The fighters have all rushed away, leaving the river unprotected. It’s odd for them. They usually patrol every area.

It isn’t until later that I hear the whispers.

The king is dead.

A hunt has returned with monsters at her side and dispatched him.

The world is free.

I have a hard time believing that any human, no matter the monsters at her side, will rule this world any better though. The wall will remain, and even if it doesn’t, there will be no place for the king’s experiment in any realm.

It will be the same.

Slipping from the water to rest on the edge, I decide to simply observe and watch the events unfold, but movement at the top of the castle catches my eye. My vision is not nearly as good as a true fey’s, but I can still make out a woman on the ledge. Her dark brunette hair swirls in the wind as she faces whatever danger comes near her.

Something deep inside me lurches toward her despite not knowing what’s happening. It’s a silly thought, since I belong to no one and I’m not worthy of anything.

I watch as she exchanges words I can’t hear.

She tips backwards, and my gasp catches in my throat.

She plummets through the air at an impossible speed, not even trying to fight it. By the time the gargoyle leaps from the top to go after her, he’s too late.

I’m closer.

I’m already in the water before I’m conscious of leaping in, rushing toward her position as she crashes into the river with a force that should kill any human. When I come from beneath and wrap my arms around her waist, her heartbeat barely thumps in her chest.

The gargoyle draws closer, and I make a split-second decision.

She will not die today. My instincts refuse to let her.

I cover her mouth with my hand, forcing air into her lungs just before I dive beneath the water with her in my arms. The gargoyle flies past none the wiser, searching for the lost woman.

“You will live, amarta. I will make it so.”

I do not know if they wanted to hunt or hurt her, but she was obviously trying to escape them so I steal her away. I rush us to safety to protect the human in my arms.

She’s far too injured to hear me, though, as I escape the Gilded Lands and reach the small cabin I often use in the Dead Lands, carrying her limp body until I can bring her inside and gently lay her down.

I begin to heal her, using the power forced upon me to save her life.

She sleeps and while she does, I promise to take care of her, whether she hears me or not.

KAI

Warmth infuses my body.

It spreads from the center of my chest outward, until I’m aware of each limb and my fingers twitch with the feeling. My eyes remain closed for a few moments as I focus on the growing sensation. Why does it seem strange? Why is it so foreign?

“I love you, baby sister. I always will.”

My chest squeezes as the memory comes back to me. I should be dead, but instead, I can feel my body.
