“For a while. We were even going to marry, which is a binding ceremony,” she admits. “But that was before.”

Wanting to take her mind off that and the darkness she has gone through, I cough to get her attention. “How did you date?”

“Oh, well, we did activities together that we thought the other might enjoy, or we ate together or worked,” she starts.

“So we are dating.” I nod, feeling happier now that I know. Her eyes widen and her mouth parts. “Aren’t we? We do those things.”

“Well, uh,” she blunders, blushing adorably. “I guess, but you have to ask the other person on a date.”

“Oh.” I frown. I did not know I was doing this wrong with my mate. How foolish of me. If she needs human customs, I will offer her those freely. “Then will you date me?”

She giggles at my question, covering her cheeks as they redden.

“And me!” Dade raises his hand. “Date me more.”

“I would also like to date.” Kaito nods seriously.

“We are bound eternally, little oblivion, but I would also like to date,” Rook adds.

Her eyes sweep across us, her cheeks so red, they must hurt. “Oh,” is all she says.

“Did I ask wrong?” I frown, disappointed. “I’m sorry.”

“No, no, no, I . . . um, yes. Yes, I will go on dates with all of you.” She grins before it turns into the most adorable giggle. “When?”

“Now.” I shoot to my feet. “Starting with me.” I puff up my chest as she watches.

“Shadows,” Kaito curses. “I should have been faster.”

I stick my tongue out at him and hurry to her side, taking her hand and lifting her to her feet. My hands linger on her hips as she swallows, her eyes wide like the moon as they meet mine.

“Now?” she whispers.

“Now.” I grin, removing my hands even though I don’t want to, but I don’t want to make her uncomfortable. “Come, bacca, let’s date.”

Chapter

Twenty-Eight

KAI

Ihadn’t expected Weyland to be serious about going on a date right this very second, but as soon as he grabs my hand and leads me from the cabin, I start to believe that’s what he actually meant. His large fingers envelop mine, and I can’t help smiling at his excitement.

“Where exactly are we going?” I ask, grinning up at him as he leads me into the forest. “The waterfall?”

He pauses and looks down at me. “Would you prefer the waterfall?”

I shake my head. “It’s completely up to you, wolfie. Your choice.”

A grin pulls at his lips, making my insides flip, and his fingers squeeze mine gently. “Wolfie, huh?” he asks. “I like it.”

The flush that spreads across my cheeks is hard to hide, and it only makes him smile wider. Weyland is attractive with his strong jaw and bright eyes, but Weyland smiling? He’s infinitely more sensual. His smile is free of strain and fear. He’s simply existing, and everything about it draws me closer to him. When we first met, he didn’t smile nearly as much as he does now.Perhaps I am changing my monsters as much as they are changing me.

We walk for about twenty minutes before Weyland stops at a particularly large tree. From what I can see, there’s nothing special about it. There’s nothing on it or in it, and there are no waterfalls or structures around us. I’m confused about why he chose this spot but decide he probably just wanted to be away from the cabin in general.

Determined I should encourage him, I pat the tree trunk. “This is a nice tree,” I say. “Perfectly treelike.”

Weyland snorts out a laugh that has my insides flipping again. “We’re not there yet.” He leans down and looks me in the eye, getting so close that his musk wraps around me and has me swaying into him. “Do you trust me,bacca?”
