“Sure,” she whispers, but her eyes drop to my lips and linger.

Desire slams through me, and I’m suddenly very aware that her soft, warm body is pressed against every inch of mine. My hands hold her shapely hips and I flex my fingers.

“Kaito,” she whispers.

“We should go,” I respond, my voice hoarse, but I don’t pull away and neither does she. She searches my eyes once more.

As her eyes drop to my lips again, want and jealousy pour through me.

She kissed Weyland without panicking. I worry if I kiss her again, she will panic once more like she did the first time we tried, and I don’t think I could handle that so I turn away, but a gasp slips free of my lips as she grabs my arm, tugging me to face her, and with a soft smile, she presses her lips to mine, kissing me.

Chapter

Thirty-Two

KAI

The desire to kiss Kaito slammed into me so hard, I needed it to happen, and now here we are, our lips pressed together in the intimate act, his arms around me.

It’s not enough.

It’s nice, warm, and comforting, but we’re out here in the middle of the forest. There’s somewhere Kaito wants to take me, so there will be plenty of time for kissing, right?

The tingles beneath my skin have me breaking the kiss with a gasp to look down. I can’t see the lightning right now—the kiss was too brief for that—but I can feel the beginnings of it. Kaito immediately leans in, his eyes searching my skin.

“I can’t see it,” he murmurs, his eyes wide as he trails his fingers over my arm. “But it’s almost like there’s static along your arm. I can sense the magic here.”

Nodding, I look up into his eyes. “I think it will appear if we continue kissing.”

Suddenly, we’re both thinking of doing so again. It’s obvious in his sharpened gaze, both of us wanting to lock ourselves together and kiss until we breathe each other’s air and there’s no way to tell where we begin and end in our joining. I don’t knowhow much I’m ready for, but I know desire courses through my body. I know something low in my stomach yearns for Kaito in a way I haven’t felt for so long. I want to kiss him and keep kissing him, but I also want to see whatever he wants to show me.

Kaito, as if sensing my conflict, smiles softly at me and threads his fingers with mine, breaking the tension. The gentle webbing between his fingers is soft against my skin, reminding me that these men I’m falling for aren’t quite men at all, but it doesn’t change anything about this moment. It doesn’t change my desire for the four monsters who have saved me more than once, both from myself and other monsters. I’m slowly waking back up, and I’m starting to want a life filled with love and excitement.

They are reminding me why I should live.

“The place I want to take you to is in the Dead Lands,” Kaito says. “Because of how far it is, it would be best if I carry you.”

“Have I been slowing you down?” I ask, worried they have all watered themselves down for my benefit.

He tilts his head, studying me. “Sometimes it’s best to move slowly to remind us what it’s like for you. We do not change ourselves to meet your limitations. We walk slowly so that we may walk beside you, to be with you, and never take away your choices.” He sighs. “But in this, it is very far, and if we’re to make it back to the others in a timely manner so they don’t come looking for us, then I should carry you.”

I nod in understanding. When he gives me his back and kneels, I gently step forward and wrap my arms around his shoulders. He reaches back and hooks my thighs, wrapping them around his waist. I realize the mistake immediately as he adjusts my weight and begins to run. In this position, my core is pressed against his flexing muscles, against the heat of his body. I begin to burn, my fingers curling into each other to stop myself from caressing his body in a distracting way. My breathingchanges as he runs, turning from deep, relaxing breaths to shallow gasps I try to hide against his back. I’m so focused on the feeling of him between my thighs that it takes me far too long to understand just how fast we’re moving. When I blink my eyes open in an attempt to push away my desire, I stare in surprise at just how fast the scenery is moving past us. I immediately slam my eyes shut again when it makes me feel dizzy.

If Kaito can run this fast on land, I wonder how fast he can move in the water.

“Almost there,” Kaito murmurs, assuming my breathing is from anxiety rather than arousal.

When he begins to slow a few minutes later, I keep my eyes closed tightly until he comes to a complete stop. I can feel the deep breathing in his chest as he slows his heart rate. Clearly, he ran as fast as he possibly could and gave it his all, and everything about that thought reminds me how much I want him.

Kaito lowers my legs to the ground before turning to face me. My arms remain around his shoulders as I sway, but I keep my eyes closed as I catch my bearings. The feel of his flesh, smooth and slick, against mine is what I focus on to ground me.

“Open your eyes, Kai,” he whispers.

I do as he says, opening my eyes achingly slowly. When I get a look at the scenery around us, they fly open the rest of the way in surprise, taking it all in.

“What is this place?” I murmur, staring in wonder.

There’s a large, crystal-clear pool before us, and around it are the prettiest flowers and plants, adding to this whimsical, fantastical view. There’s no waterfall, but there’s a bubbling water source on the far side of the pool. Steam rises gently from the water—not enough to expect to boil inside, but enough to make me wary. There’s a buzz in the air that I can’t place, something that reminds me of . . .
