“Wait,” I say, interrupting him. “What do you mean Kai’s powers?”

Kai flushes. “Ah, yes. About that . . .” She holds up her hand and closes her eyes. For a few seconds, nothing happens, but then I see a spark, and then another, before tiny lightning streaks begin to dance along her palm and up her arm. Her skin glows with it.

I reach out and touch Grim’s hand in surprise and excitement. I thought I was a fluke, but two sisters with power? That means it’s in our blood.

My smile fades at that realization. If we carry it in our blood, then it came from one of our parents. It couldn’t have been my father because he would have used it if given the advantage, which leaves our mother.

How sad to be so suppressed and never know the power in your veins.

“Do you know what it can do?” I ask curiously. I move closer, and her lightning leaps from her to me so suddenly, I startle. It’s cool to the touch, with a slight buzz around it as it twists along my skin. It doesn’t hurt. In fact, it feels calming and safe.

“I know it can heal,” Kai admits. “Kaito was dying, and I saved him.”

Kaito proudly points to a scar on his chest like it’s a badge of honor. “A fatal wound. Kai stitched it back together with her lightning.”

Grim nods as if he isn’t shocked. “Complimenting powers. The healer and the sword.”

“It’s as if we’re meant to be one unit,” I murmur, meeting Kai’s eyes. After all these years of struggle and pain, the answer was inside us the whole time.

I reach for her, and she takes my hand without hesitation. We share a smile between us—the same smile we used to share while hiding under the covers and telling each other scary stories as children. It’s a promise between two sisters to always be there for one another until the very end.

“Merryl may be a fool,” I say, “but perhaps he could be reasoned with if he understood the consequences of starting a war between monsters and humans. I hoped we could settle the three realms, but if he’s the leader of the rebellion, then perhaps it’s best to try negotiating first.”

“Negotiating?” Rook asks, narrowing his eyes. “This human kills monsters for sport.”

Grim sniffs. “When Cora says negotiating, she means we offer him an option and he either takes it or doesn’t. There will be no gifting him anything.”

Rook settles back and nods. “Better.”

“So we send a message,” Kai says. “We ask to meet him on neutral ground in the Shadow Lands, and then we try to make him see reason.”

“And if he doesn’t?” I ask, watching my sister closely. “If he claims the monsters should all be put down?”

Kai’s eyes harden, and I see the warrior she’s become. “Then we put him down,” she growls.

Clearly, there’s no love lost between my sister and her ex-fiancé, but I don’t blame her. If I were in her position, I would have slaughtered the asshole a long time ago for refusing to help me.

It doesn’t matter now, though, because she doesn’t need him.

Kai has us now—her sister and her monsters.

Her family.

Chapter

Fifty-Three

KAI

With our plan made and the message sent, it’s simply a matter of waiting for a response from the man I once thought I loved, which means there’s no more planning until then.

“Now what?” Bracken asks. The dark fey is reclined across a bench, tossing a citrus fruit in the air over and over again, like a cat playing with yarn. Somehow, I feel like the fey is more akin to some great beast than a house cat. He sits up after his question and wiggles his eyebrows. “An orgy?”

Cora snorts and throws some of her fruit at him. He catches it with a grin and pops the fruit into his mouth.

“You’ll have to forgive Bracken.” She laughs. “He doesn’t have the best manners.”

Bracken stands and steps around my sister, his fingers stroking along her hips. “You like my chaos, Goldie.”
