She flicks her hair off her shoulders and leans forward, wise beyond her years. “What’s my surprise?”

“Dad, look!” Waverley spins, her dress splaying wide. “Auntie Luce had it made for me. It’s for Nana and Papa’s ball. Mummy surprised me today.”
I stand from my resting position at the kitchen island, using my crutches to make my way toward her in the hallway. “You look like a princess.”
“I feel like a princess!” she sings gleefully. “You should see Mummy’s dress. Your eyes will fall out of your head.”
I chuckle, dropping my chin.Oh, baby girl, you have no idea.“Probably.”
She looks over her shoulder and then motions me closer with her hand.
I drop to my good knee. “What?”
“Did you text her?”
I frown, recalling our conversation this morning. I’d asked Waverley if she knew her mother’s phone number. She came back not five minutes later with it written out on a scrap of paper. “I said I was going to.”
“Butdidyou?” she says wide-eyed, desperate for my response.
“Yes, I texted her.”
A smile transforms her face. “I knew it!”
“You knew it?” I ask.
“Uh-huh. She wassweating.”
“She was?”
Waverley nods, her grin still stretched. “What did you say to her?”
Sweet shit balls. “Uh… I—um…” I swallow, running a hand through my hair. “I told her how…” My brain misfires. I have nothing. “Waverley—”
“You told her what? Come on!”
“I told her I wanted to kiss her,” I rush out.
Her mouth drops open.
“Crap,” I mutter. “Don’t tell anyone that.”
“Did you at least say hi first?”
