“I haven’t told her nothing.”

“Told me what?” I ask.

“Nothing.” He shakes his head. “It’s just… that dress.”

The dress I wore on the day he picked me up from the pharmacy.

“You look perfect. It’s perfect, actually.”

Not understanding but choosing to go with it, I reach over and pick up the mostly burnt cheese toastie off the side.

“Sorry. We were going to bring you breakfast in bed.”

I lift it to my mouth and take a bite out of the least burnt part.

“Scarlet, I’ll make you another one.”

I shake my head. “I want this one.”

“You’re weird,” Ave mutters from behind me, making me smile. I take another bite. It’s not nearly as bad as Ave makes out.

“It’s fine.”

“She’s lying. You’re both as bad as each other.”

Lance chuckles, his smile wide as he steps around me and goes back to doing Ave’s hair. I pull out a chair and watch while I nibble on the edible parts of my sandwich.

Half an hour later, Vinny walks in through the double doors. “Morning.”

“Hey, Vin.” I smile.

He comes around to kiss the top of my head.

We’ve barely seen him this week, and it shows. Whenever we come here, he ends up running around after everyone else despite us all telling him it’s a break for him, too. But the golden tan that makes his blue eyes gleam and the lightness around his eyes, tells me he’s used the week to rest and recharge.

“Vinny, will you do my braids? Dad’s terrible, and Mum’s refusing.”

Vinny’s chuckle rumbles from deep in his chest. “I don’t want to get into trouble, Ave.”

Lance holds his hands up, letting go of his now fifth attempt. He’s nearly got it to be fair. “Please help me.” He eyes me. “We’ve got to get going anyway.”

“Get going where?” I ask as Vinny takes his place and starts brushing Ave’s hair.

“He’s taking you on a date,” Ave teases. “He even went shopping and bought you a new dress.”

I look to Lance, his hands on his hips as he shakes his head at his daughter. He brings his attention to me. “Your dress is perfect, Scarlet. I’ll take the other back.”

I smile. “What date?”

He shrugs, his cheeks colouring as he flicks his eyes from Vinny to Ave to me. “I never really took you on a first official one.”

So that’s why he was looking at my dress.

“Will you come?”

“On a date?”

He nods, swallowing around an unnecessary ball of doubt that he seems to hold in his throat.
