I try to make sense of why I’m driving the roads to the estate, not knowing what I’ll even say to Scarlet when I get there. Can I just slip into bed and pretend the last week never happened? Will she send me away again?

I don’t need a big grand confession of her love for me.

I don’t need anI love you.

I justneedher.

A car at the side of the road catches my attention, and I squint, trying to get a better look. “The fuck is anyone doing out at this time of night?” And in this weather.

I slow as I near, spotting a figure dash out from around the back of the car and into the front seat.

I sigh, knowing I should at least get a look despite the fact they haven’t bothered to flag me down.

When I pull over in front of the car, my eyes drop to the Mercedes badge and then the number plate.

“What the—” I pull open the car door, and in a panic, Scarlet seems to do the same.

With the rain pelting down, I take in her soaked clothes, her pink cheeks. My eyes widen. “What are you doing?”

She shakes her head. “I couldn’t sleep!” she instantly yells back. “What areyoudoing?”

“You couldn’t sleep? So, you think dancing around on a road I was almost killed on in the fucking rain is a good idea?”

“Stop yelling at me. I was coming to your place.”

“My place?” I ask, dumbfounded. “Then why are you stopped at the side of the road and soaked through?”

“The car.” She thumbs behind her. “It wasn’t as charged as I thought.” She doesn’t look at me. “I didn’t bring my phone and was checking the boot for a coat so I could walk.”

My eyes bug out, and I turn, unable to even look at her. I run my hand through my soaked hair. “I can’t… I can’t believe you thought it was a good idea to walk this road. I can’t—”

“Why areyouout here?” she snaps back, and I can tell she’s shaken up by the way her voice cracks. “Where wereyougoing?”

“Where do you think I was going?”

“I don’t know.”

Yes, you fucking do.

I watch her grasp at straws, her brow pinching together. “Maybe… maybe you had needs you needed seeing to.”

My tether all but snaps. “Yeah, Scar, because you didn’t fucking nail me to the ground by the balls the second we met. You think women exist in my mind outside of you? ’Cause they fucking don’t.”

“I know that.” She shakes her head as if it’s stupid, water dripping from the soaked strands of her hair. “I’m sorry.”

“Sorry,” I repeat.

She nods, eyes lifting to lock with mine. A small smile teases the corner of her mouth, one she tries so fucking hard to fight.

Fuck.

“Did we just have our first fight?” she asks.

“Yeah, and I’m that pissed at you, we’re likely about to have our second. Get in the car.”

She makes her way around my car, slipping inside.

I slide into the driver’s side, watching her hands smooth over the seat at her sides. “I’m getting everything wet.”
