“Tomorrow?” she asks hopefully.

“Not tomorrow. But because of his surgery, they’ll let him come home sooner this time. It’s not like before when they didn’t know if he’d need an operation.”

Her teeth peek out from a stretched smile. “I’m a little nervous.”

I close my eyes, letting her settle all around me. “Me, too, baby. But we’re going to be just fine.”

Lance

“Any luck?”

I shake my head, running my tongue over my teeth in pure frustration. “What happens from here?”

“Well…” Mia looks down, clearly debating what she’s about to say. “Your friend Mason was pretty clear you’d be leaving with him today. That you’d be able to go home and that he’d be coming with you.”

“It’s not a possibility for him,” I tell her again, holding her stare in the hope she gets it this time. There’s no way I’d have Mason live away from his family. I was the cause of it once before, and I won’t be it again. “I’ll try finding my mum’s number. If not, I’ll be going home alone. I’ll sign whatever it is you need me to sign to allow it.”

“Lance, there’s no way you’ll be able to go home alone.”

I grit my teeth and stare at my leg.

Charlie told me that my mum hadn’t called me once while I was away, and while I didn’t expect her to care, I can’t lie and say I wasn’t disappointed that she didn’t.

I don’t even have my mother’s phone number anymore.

“We can give it another couple of days, see how you are—”

I shake my head, annoyance getting the better of me. I feel ready to explode. I can’t take much more of this room. This bed. The quiet and the not knowing about Waverley and—

“Hey.”

I flick my eyes up at the sound of her voice, quickly righting my slumped form in the bed and running my hand through my hair, smoothing it out the best I can. “Scarlet.”

“Hey! What are you doing here?” I look to Mia just in time to catch her frown. Scarlet is meant to be on leave after being attacked. I’ve not seen her all week.

She tries to pretend it’s nothing. Tries to. Her eyes meet mine, and she forces a shaky smile. “I’m here to pick Lance up.”

I tilt my head, not understanding and feeling stupid for having to explain that I have no one to look after me at home.

“Lance isn’t able to leave,” Mia answers for me. “He doesn’t have aid at home. He’ll be in for another couple of days until he’s at least able to get around.”

“He has aid,” Scarlet confirms, the words firm, as if she’s telling herself.

Mia seems to frown harder, a little taken aback. “What aid? He’s refusing to have your brother stay.”

She doesn’t look at me. Won’t look at me. “He has me. He’s coming home with me.”

Home.

Did she just say home?

“With you?” Mia gives Scarlet a look that saysHave you lost your mind?

“With me,” Scarlet says, her eyes darting everywhere but the bed.

“Right. Well then… I’ll go and get you a chair.” Mia leaves the room.

I sit and watch as Scarlet looks toward my things on the recliner. “Do you have anything in the bathroom to pack?”
