I give him a look. “You could do that for me on your way out.”

He holds up his phone, Lissie’s name flashing on the screen as if he had her call right at that second on purpose. “Have you seen my wife?”

I chuckle. “You know what I’m excited for, Mr Charlie Aldridge?”

“You have about a second to tell me.”

“I’m excited for you to get phone fucked by your wife tonight so that tomorrow we can get the less grumpy—”

“Lis.” He stares me down in disbelief, his eyes darkening within a second.

I’ll never understand, nor want to understand, the primal need Charlie Aldridge has for his wife. Lissie is the sweetest, funniest person I’ve ever met, and to look at her, you’d never believe she’d be the woman to wield as much power as she does over him.

It’s hot as much as it is dangerous.

“I’m now leaving Lowerwick. Half an hour?”

“Half an hour is too fast,” I mutter.

“I won’t drive too fast,” he huffs to his wife, clearly frustrated with the both of us.

“Hi, Lis!” I call out.

“No, you can’t talk to her,” Charlie tells Lissie, the tension in his shoulders getting visibly thicker. “You’ll see her in a couple of weeks anyway.”

“Give me the phone,” I tell him, reaching across the island.

“Cut it out, both of you,” he snaps.

“Charles!” I playfully scold.

“Lis,” he groans, listening. “Fine.”

He hands the phone to me, his face like thunder. I turn my back to him. “Hey!” I grin into the phone.

“I feel like we have three minutes before he self-destructs.”

I look over my shoulder at her husband, steam practically flowing from his ears. “You’re not wrong. You’re going to have your work cut out tonight.”

“Can he hear us?”

“No,” I say a little quieter. “Why?”

“I’m at home.”

“What?” I snap, my eyes widening. “But…”

“I’m not due home for another three weeks, I know. Mum and Dad came with me.”

“Oh.” I grimace, wondering about the semantics of that…

“They’re renting a place while they’re here obviously,” she clarifies. “There’s no way I could have them stay with us. And I was excited to see my beautiful brute of a man tonight, but now I’m nervous as shit. He’s pent up?”

I look over my shoulder again and find Charlie, hands on hips, glowering at me. “I think you shouldextendyour trip, Lis. I’d run for the hills.”

“Give me the phone,” Charlie demands, reaching forward and taking it from my hand.

“Bye, Lissie!” I shout. “I’ll be praying for you.”
