“Warn me?” He drops one of his crutches and pulls at his T-shirt. “I feel great.”

I bend to pick up the crutch. “You’re not in pain?”

He gives up on his T-shirt, smiles down at me a little dazed, then kicks off his trainer. “I’m achy as hell, but for the first time in days, I don’t feel like I’ve been hit by a bus.”

“Well, I’m glad you’re feeling better.” I step around him. “Would you prefer a bath? Annie said—”

“You’re glad?” He snorts. “I thought you’d hate me forever.”

I pause just inside the en suite door, and he stumbles into my back. I glance up over my shoulder, his tall frame towering over me.

My body warms, as if wrapped up in a blanket.

His pupils are huge, and he blinks over and over. That lazy smile reminding me too much of nights I’ve long let go. “A bath sounds good,” he mutters, his eyes flicking around my face.

I swallow and nod, turning away to run the bath. “I don’t hate you, Lance. I’ve never hated you.”

“Maybe you should. It would be easier if you did.”

As the bath fills, I grab a fresh towel and place it on the side, close enough for him to reach once he’s done in the bath. Lance watches me from his spot in the middle of the room.

He looks utterly knackered. “I knew those tablets would hit you hard. You’re tired.”

He shakes his head adamantly. “I’ve been sleeping because of you.”

He has been. In fact, Lance has slept uninterrupted for the past week. Each night I sat in the chair, the curtain slightly pulled back.

“Your eyes are heavy. You’re about five minutes from falling asleep.” I already know the bath is a bad idea. “Here.” I tap his arm for him to lift it.

A sly smirk drags up one side of his face. “You want me naked, Lowell?”

I give him an incredulous look.

His eyes don’t leave me. “You always were the hornier of the two of us.”

“I see we’re letting our intrusive thoughts win tonight.”

“They’re not intrusive. It’s factual information.”

Lord, help me. I reach for his other crutch, but he pulls it out of reach.

“But… are you saying you have intrusive thoughts that you don’t let win when you’re around me?”

I sigh. “Anyone with any self-control has intrusive thoughts they don’t let win. Do you want my help or not?”

“Are they about me?”

I pause and look up at him. “No.”

He grins then winks. “Sure.”

Fucking asshole.

And fuck Annie and her tablets. As if my life wasn’t interesting enough without a spunky, off-his-face Lance to deal with.

“Are you going to stay? Keep me from drowning?”

“You have less chance of drowning if I leave.”
