“Please, don’t say that,” Autumn pleaded as she pulled back. “You don’t owe me anything. Truthfully, I’m not even sure what I did. I just wanted to get revenge for you, but I didn’t know my new powers would do this. I should have considered that I might be putting you all in danger by coming here before I—”

“Nonsense. Of course, you should be here,” Rachel admonished. “This is your home, and we are your family.”

“But being the Goddess of Revenge is dangerous to everyone around me.”

Rachel shook her head. “I don’t think that’s accurate. Revenge isn’t evil. At least, it isn’t at the heart of it. It’s how it’s used or wielded that makes all the difference.”

“As the Goddess of Revenge, you have the opportunity to get justice for people who may not be able to do so for themselves. That is a powerful gift, my girl,” Paul insisted. “Being able to punish the guilty and bring balance back to those who deserve it is a strong, positive ability. You shouldn’t fear it.”

“You also have to remember that revenge and vengeance are two different things,” Miya pointed out.

“What do you mean?” Confused, Autumn asked, “What’s the difference?”

“As far as I know, the last God of Revenge dealt with lesser infractions, while the God of Vengeance handled murders and more grave offenses. Be glad you aren’t dealing with blood-soaked vengeance on the daily.”

Autumn could definitely be grateful about that since she got queasy at the very thought of becoming the go-to girl for murder and mayhem. But if she could help give people the justice they deserved, that wasn’t a bad thing. In fact, she was really starting to like the idea.

And that scared her.

“Being the god in charge of helping people get revenge is pretty cool,” Huxley said. “I mean, you could have gotten something awful instead. Just imagine being the God of Lactose Intolerance, or something like that.”

Thank god for Hux, Autumn thought as she laughed. “There can’t possibly be a god for that.”

“Oh, you’d be surprised by some of the stupid shit that gets a high god label,” Miya countered. “If there is a God of Hiccups, then there is no limit.”

“There is a God of Hiccups?” Murphy asked.

Miya nodded. “Unfortunately, yes. And that little fucker likes to pop up when you least expect him.”

Autumn shook her head. “Weird.”

“This is why reapers are far better than the celestial gods since our powers aren’t tied to any ridiculous titles.” Devlin lifted his wine glass in a silent toast. “Now, we should get to work teaching you how to be a god.”

“Not to sound ungrateful, but why are you helping me?” Autumn asked suspiciously.

The reaper drained his glass, then slapped the table and stood. “I have my reasons. One being that I have a fondness for the concept of revenge. I’m also interested in seeing what you can do. How often does one get to observe a new god coming into their powers?”

“Fuck forgiveness. We’re team revenge,” Murphy declared with a wide grin, and his twin nodded in agreement.

Rachel shot them a glare, then let out a little laugh. “Okay, I guess I am, too.” She turned back to Autumn. “Until you understand how to use your new magic, you probably shouldn’t go back to the city. It’s safer to stay here on the farm, away from humans.”

“That’s a good idea.”

“But the rest of us can help you.” Huxley got to his feet and rubbed his hands together. “So, let’s get to work.”

Chapter Five

“This morning’s drillisn’t just an exercise. Consider this a simulation of a real-life situation. You’ve all gone through the basic training, but now it’s time to put what you’ve learned to the test,” Kingston Spencer announced to the group of firefighter trainees standing in front of him.

“This is crazy,” one of the younger trainees muttered. “They really expect us to run into that?”

Thathappened to be the ten-story tower that was used for training purposes, which was currently on fire. Well, most of the structure had been made of specially treated steel and stone, but flames were shooting out of several of the open windows in the building. While it looked extremely dangerous, it was a highly controlled environment that had been carefully constructed to seem chaotic.

But the trainees didn’t know that.

Kingston stalked over to stand directly in front of the trainee who had spoken, making the other male gulp nervously. As a powerful fire demon with a big, muscular body, he had an imposing aura he used to his full advantage. He narrowed his cold gray eyes and spoke softly, but there was no mistaking the sheer menace in his tone.

“What was that Meyers? I didn’t hear you.”
