Page 30 of Tethered Magick

Thick fingers closed around my neck, squeezing hard enough to cut off my air supply. Yanking me closer, he sniffed the crux of my shoulder. I watched in horror as fangs elongated from his gums, the teeth of his wolf.

“Someday you’ll beg me for this bite,” he taunted, his mouth moving closer to my skin. His teeth raked over the column of my throat, and I mustered a scream as I fought with the last of my strength.

If I was going to lose, I was going to go down swinging.

He never had the chance to break the skin. Dason rammed into him, taking him down in the meanest football style tackle I’d ever seen.

“Ten points to Gryffindor,” I snarked, and then slumped against the trunk of the tree keeping me vertical.

Magick fizzled through the air, the small, red particles sparkling and coalescing until two beings stood in front of me.

“Can you move?” I mumbled, my mind fading with each second that passed. “You’re kind of blocking my view.” Beyond the two dark creatures I couldn’t focus on, Dason grappled with Maple. I hoped he punched him in the nads so hard he’d never be able to use his dick again. He deserved as much for being such an asshole.

A flash of golden fur later, and Dason went for the throat, ripping it out and silencing Maple once and for all. I didn’t even care that I never knew his name.

The dark part of my soul was glad he’d never be able to hurt another woman.

That guy was scum.

Dason’s mouth was covered in blood as he shifted and stood. It dripped down his bare chest, his shirt ripped and coated in grime. He glared down at Mara, who backed up slowly with a whimper.

“What have you done?” he snarled.

The two creatures each latched onto one of my arms, and fear shot through me. I was too far gone to fight. Too far gone to even grasp what was happening. But the way Dason’s eyes widened told me my shitty night was far from over.

His roar hurt my ears as he ran for me, his feet digging into the ground as he pushed himself to reach me in time.

Red sparkles danced in front of me, and my whole body tingled like a live wire.

My eyes were hooded. So tired.

Just as fast as they’d appeared, the supernaturals holding me faded from sight, and I faded with them.

Oh, shit! Vampires?

My feet disappeared, then my legs.

Dason leapt for me just before my eyes closed.

I succumbed to the darkness taking hold.

And the last thought that went through my muddled mind was that I’d never get to meet my seventh mate, whoever the hell he was.

Ten

Dason

“Get your bloodsucking hands off my mate!” I roared at the vampires holding Lorn, and slammed into the silver coated bars of the cage I was trapped in. Just like shifters, skinwalkers had an aversion to silver, and try as I might, I couldn’t shift and slip past the bars to rescue Lorn.

My puma yowled over and over again in my mind, obscuring any thought other than my mate’s name.

Lorn, Lorn, Lorn.

I couldn’t watch them sink their fangs into her again, and yet I was riveted, unable to look away and betray my mate in yet another way.

Her pain was my pain, and it always would be whether I could feel the connection between us or not.

And right now, it was fucking empty.
