“Extend the same kindness to her that she showed my mate.” His eyes flashed yellow with his wrath. “Send her to the vampires and have her turned. She’ll be under their jurisdiction and no longer our problem. I trust Master Alistair to see to her transformation personally. In return, tell him I have information on the Malvakians that he’ll find incriminating. Maybe our testimony will help him track down those bastards and stop them once and for all.”

Mato nodded. “Done. We’ll text when it’s complete.”

“No!” Mara screamed as Nahele dragged her away from us. “No, please! Dason, Chayton, Axel, Kota… anyone. Please.”

“You’ll get no sympathy from us,” Chayton told her, his voice cold and unrelenting. He hugged Lorn closer. The steady rise and fall of her chest was the only sign she was still alive. “Enjoy your new life. A fair sentence. If it had been me, I don’t know that I would have let you live.”

Nahele created a portal and shoved Mara through it, the lights of New York city shining through the undulating magick.

“Dase,” Mato added before dragging a sobbing Mara away. “We stand with you. Let us know when and where, and we’ll be there.”

Dason nodded, then turned to the rest of us. “Let’s get our girl home.”

I moved to Chayton and held out my arms.I’d like to have her.He felt the quivering rage that simmered below the surface that would only be quelled by having her close.

Of course, brother. He laid her in my arms. She was so goddamn tiny compared to me, and I cradled her like the precious angel she was.

Growing up an orphan, Jolon had been the only person I’d cared about for as long as I could remember. But now there was Lorn, and the pack.

We finally had a place to belong, and I’d be damned if anyone tried to destroy what we’d built.

As we portaled home and I carried my mate inside, I swore I’d protect her with my life. I’d be the shield that stood between her and the raging world around us. Everything else could crumble, and I’d make sure she was still standing.

If anyone wanted to get to her, they’d have to get through me first.

Chapter Seventeen

Lorn

Iwoke up in a bundle of heat and groaned. My body hurt like I’d done five sessions of Crossfit back to back.

“Lorn?” Jolon sounded stressed.

I tried to respond, but my mouth was dry and I couldn’t form the words.

A large hand cupped my face and stroked my cheek. Syler’s earthy scent washed over me and a wave of calm eased my growing anxiety.

Why did Jolon sound so worried?

“Hey, firecracker. Can you open your eyes?”

It took a few tries, but eventually my lashes fluttered open and the handsome faces of my mates swam into view. Jolon and Syler were on either side of me. I stretched, feeling the softness of a mattress beneath me.

“Hi,” I croaked, and my giant mate disappeared, returning a minute later with a glass of water.

Drink, he mouthed, and Jolon helped me lean up so I wouldn’t choke. Cool water sluiced down my throat, instantly easing the scorching burn. I took another sip and then laid back down.

“What happened?”

“You don’t remember?” Jolon pressed. “We were attacked. You vanquished a shit ton of shades and then disappeared into the veil on us. We’ve been fucking worried about you for days.”

“Days?” I gasped and sat up with the help of Syler.

“Today’s day three, and if you ever scare me like that again, I’m going to murder you myself.”

“Romantic,” I snarked, but it all came back to me as the grogginess of unconsciousness dissipated. “The others?” The thought that something had happened while I’d been out spiked fear into my bloodstream.

“Everyone’s ok. They’re so fucking happy you’re awake. But I’m going to keep them out until you’re feeling a little better. I don’t want to overwhelm you. Chayton’s already cooking and Axel is pacing the hallways. Dason and Kota are on patrol with Tye, teaching him the ropes.”
