“Ready?” I ask.

She looks up from examining her nails, flicks her eyes over me, and then nods and walks toward the door. I follow behind her, admiring the long line of her legs.

True to his word, George is waiting for us at the top of the stairs and when he sees Alex, his eyes light up. “Don’t you look like a vision. Come, a late lunch is ready, and the family is waiting to meet you.”

He holds out his arm, and Alex links hers with his. My jaw clenches at the sight. She smiles at him as he leads the way.

The house is vast and once we reach the bottom of the stairs, it becomes clear just how large it is. George leads us down a long corridor toward the back of the house, pointing out the study, library, bathroom, oneof the lounges and a large dining room.

He seems to have done well for himself, but I can’t help but feel a sense of resentment toward him.

“The dining room is more for entertaining large groups. When it’s just the family, we like to use the kitchen. It feels less formal and has a more homely feel to it. I hope you don’t mind if we eat there,” George babbles, looking as if he would have all the meals we’ll have held in there if Alex so desired.

A genuine laugh leaves Alex’s mouth as she says, “Not at all, George. We want to feel part of your family, if that’s okay?”

Maybe she does, but I have no such desire.

“That is fantastic, as that’s what we want too.”

All but ignoring me as we walk, it seems if I just keep my mouth shut, Alex will charm the pants off of George.

The kitchen is a hive of activity when we arrive. Miriam fusses around, plating up an assortment of delicious smelling dishes. One of their sons, that I can only assume is Daniel, is standing next to a stunning petite brunette woman, whispering who knows what in her ear. Whatever it is, she’s barely able to contain the blush that steals across her cheeks as she swats at his chest.

“Get a room, will you?”

This must be Jensen, the movie star. I’m man enough to admit when a guy is attractive, and objectively speaking, he is. He’s probably as tall as me, with striking blue eyes and almost jet black hair. He looks almost Mediterranean, but I’m guessing his tanned complexion doesn’t come from a heritage, but more likely a sunbed.

George bellows to the room, turning all heads in our direction, “Everyone, this is Sebastian.” He points behind him to me and I signal to the room with my hand as I curl my lip in what’s supposed to be a smile. “And Alex, his fiancée.”

“It’s nice to meet you all,” Alex mutters, a shyness taking over her.

Jensen stands from his seat at the kitchen island and stalks toward Alex. A cocky smirk lifts the corner of his mouth as he approaches.

Holding out his hand, he waits for her to take a hold of it. When she does, he brings it to his lips as he bends at the waist. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Alex.”

I don’t think anyone else sees it, but I see the moment her breath hitches and mouth falls open.

“You’re Jensen Bennett,” she mumbles, her voice all sultry and breathless.

Time to step in, because I’m not having my fiancée fall for another guy, no matter how fake our engagement is. I move behind Alex and slip my arm around her waist, thrusting my hand out to Jensen.

Not today, buddy.

“That I am, sweetheart.” He takes a hold of my outstretched hand with a firm grip. “It’s nice to meet you, man.”

“Jensen, stop trying to flirt with Alex. She’s an engaged woman,” Miriam scolds.

Jensen throws a wink at Alex before turning around and walking back to his seat at the kitchen island.

“Come, take a seat at the table,” George calls.

With my arm still around Alex’s waist, I guide her to the seats at the oak table, far away from Jensen.

The kitchen is a modern space with a large island at the center of it. White cabinets fill one wall with the perfect view of Lake Geneva on display through the sliding doors on another. Pulling out a seat for Alex, I push her in once she’s settled, taking the one next to her.

“I’m Sophie, and this is my husband, Daniel. It’s nice to meet you both.”

“It’s nice to meet you, too,” Alex and I say in unison, before we exchange a look of amusement at our synchronization.
