Alexandra Williams is going to be the end of me whether that’s from trying to work out all the intricacies that make her, her, or from the way I can’t get enough of her.

TWENTY-THREE

Alex

I’m curled up on the couch watching reruns ofFriends, munching on a bowl of popcorn when I’m hit with an overwhelming need to itch my scalp. Wiping my hand on the cotton of my leggings, I tentatively scrape my nails over the offending spot.

My focus goes back to the scene playing out in front of me, with Ross telling Rachel they were on a break. Without even thinking about it and almost too aggressively I scratch at my scalp again. A moan of appreciation leaves my lips as I relieve the sensation that’s taunting me. I think I need to admit that it’s been about a week too long since I last washed my hair.

I’m lucky that I only need to wash it once a week, but it’s been over two since we came back from Chicago. Which means it’s been at least three since I last washed it.

My phone is in my hands as I contemplate who to call. Or more importantly, who I don’t mind seeing me naked. My mom is on the other side of the country, so she’s out of the running.

Meghan is a billion years pregnant, and it’s not fair to drag her into the city to wash my hair. That leaves Savannah… and Sebastian.

Dialing Savannah, I bring the phone to my ear and wait for her to answer.

“Hey, darlin’, you okay?”

It’s noisy in the background and that’s when I remember that Savannah is away with her job this week.Fuck.

“Sorry, I forgot you were away. I just need someone to help me wash my hair,” I whine.

Savannah chuckles and the line goes quieter as I imagine her moving away from the crowd. “Can’t your boyfriend do it for you?”

My brow furrows. “My boyfriend?”

I can hear the smile in Savannah’s voice as she says, “Yeah, Sebastian.”

“He’s not my boyfriend.”

“Whatever you need to tell yourself, sweetheart, but you’ve been with him constantly for the last few weeks,” Savannah chuckles.

I’m distracted when I reply, absentmindedly scratching my scalp. “I’ve got to go call Se—” I stop myself before I say his name. She doesn’t need any more fuel for her stories.

Savannah doesn’t hold back when she laughs this time, and I can just picture the looks she must be getting. “Let me know how it goes.”

With a murmured goodbye, I hang up the phone and look down at his name on the screen. Instead of calling him, I pull up the trail of messages.

Alex

I need your help.

I’m typing out a second message when my phone rings. His name displayed on the screen as my familiar ringtone plays out. I hesitate to answer, unsure why because I do need his help and it’s not like he can wash my hair through a text message.

Savannah’s words replay through my mind and I run my sweaty palm over my thigh, suddenly feeling hot.

On the last ring, I connect the call.

“Hello.” My voice is uncertain, like I don’t know who’s on the other end. Clearing my throat, I sit up straight as I say, “Hello, Sebastian.”

“What’s wrong? What do you need my help with?” Worry is evident in his tone, and immediately, I want to put him at ease.

I run my fingers through my hair, stopping at the back of my head to scratch an unbearable itch.

“I was just wondering if you wouldn't mind… I mean, it’s a bit of a strange request, but with my arm in a cast, I kind of can’t wash my hair. Would you mind—”

He cuts me off, breathing a sigh of relief. “Jesus, princess. I thought something was wrong. I’ll send a car to get you and meet you at my place. If you’re there before me, fill the bath up.”
