As I drink in her features, my mind replays the last time I saw her and how good everything has been between us. I don’t understand why she’s being so cagey now. Something must have freaked her out.

“Where’s your ring, Alex?”

My eyes explore hers as she looks up at me. If she tells me she took it off and left it at home, I’ll have her back in my apartment and bent over my knee faster than she can blink.

One of her fingers goes to the chain around her neck, and I breathe a sigh of relief as she pulls it free of her t-shirt to show me her ring.

“I told you not to take it off.”

“Technically I didn’t.” She smirks.

I arch a brow as I ask, “Finding loopholes, princess?”

“It’s kind of my job,” she replies.

Fuck, I’ve missed her.

I bend and lift her up, forcing her legs to wrap around me. In three steps I have her pressed against the wall next to the elevator.

“I still think I should punish you,” I breathe against her lips.

She captures my lips with hers, closing the distance between us. She tastes like tequila and just one lick of it makes me pull away. A frown tugs on my brow—it’s only just gone midday.

“You been drinking, baby?”

Alex drags her full bottom lip into her mouth, nodding in confirmation.

“Why?” I ask, genuinely curious as I set her down on her feet.

Alex dips her head, before lifting her chin and saying, “I needed the courage to do this.”

“Christ, Alex.” It's my turn to look away from her now. I’m ashamed that she’d need to have alcohol to go through with thisstupidplan. “Why didn’t you call me? I’m sorry. I’m sorry that you felt you needed to do that. You don’t need to do this. Just say the word and we can call it off.”

“No,” she says, almost instantly. “If we do that then it’s all been for nothing. Just kiss me, Bastian.”

My eyes roam over her face, searching for something, anything but I come up short. She’s still got her guard up.

Just one kiss.

This kiss is different, I only meant to reassure her, but it turns into something much more. It’s slow and sensual and has the power to undo me. Her full lips part, allowing my tongue to dive in and explore her. The pace is slow and steady. Neither of us are in a rush, content to take what the other is willing to give.

“Bastian,” she moans.

The sound of a door opening pulls my attention away and over to Savannah who is standing in the doorway, a hand over her eyes.

“If you guys are doing stuff, you need to stop.” Two of her fingers spread and she peeks through at us as I press Alex against the wall. “Urgh, you could have at least been doing more PG13 stuff. Jeez, guys, come on.” With that she turns on her heel and walks back into my apartment.

I can’t help the laugh that breaks free at Savannah’s ridiculousness. As I step back, Alex lets go of the lapels of my jacket, smoothing her fingers down as she does.

“Go on, princess. Go get ready and I’ll see you at the courthouse.”

She turns away from me and walks to my apartment, stopping to look at me over her shoulder before she walks in and closes the door.

I don’t move right away, instead I savor the taste of her on my tongue. And how we can’t seem to keep our hands off of each other, because I know for certain if Savannah hadn’t come out, I wouldn’t have stopped at just one kiss.

When I arrive in the lobby of my apartment building, I find Cooper and Noah talking by the door.
