Page 23 of Don't Make Promises

This is a dress that was made with seduction in mind. Maybe, when I’m ready to get back out there, I could wear this dress.

With the right pair of heels, everything will look tight and toned. Twisting and turning, I admire my body unashamedly. The material is stretchy and clings to my body like a second skin without being so restrictive that I couldn’t dance or let loose.

Ineedthis dress.

I’m just not sure I can afford it.

Releasing a heavy sigh, I pull my phone out of my bag and snap a few pictures. I’m not about to let a potentially good profile picture go to waste.

A knock sounds on the door and Sutton’s soft voice calls, “Open up. I want to see.”

My body tenses, and for a moment I wonder if I can ignore her. After an afternoon of shopping, I know that Sutton will convince me to buy this one. Not that it’ll take much.

Swinging open the door, I brace myself for her reaction.

Sutton’s eyes widen, and she rests a hand on her collarbone. “Oh, my God. Savannah, it looks perfect. You have to get it.”

I face the mirror, twisting and turning to see all angles of the dress again. “I don’t know. It’s a bit too much… well, maybe it’s better to say there isn’t a whole lot of coverage.”

“No. It highlights your curves to perfection. This is the perfect dress to seduce a man. You’re getting it.” Sutton hiccups before covering her mouth. “I’ll wait for you by the jackets.”

My brows lift and my eyes widen as she sways on the spot, “You okay?”

She nods, and when she takes a step back, I watch as she slowly moves out of the fitting rooms.

Closing the door behind me, I allow myself one final look, then tug on the zip and push the dress down over my hips. The material smooths over my skin, and even without looking at the price tag, I can tell it’s going to be way out of my budget.

I could just buy it now and stay with Sutton and Noah for another week.

Yeah, not happening.

The sooner I can get myself together and find my own place, the better.

Placing the it back on the hanger, I dress quickly. When I pull open the door, Sutton is standing on the other side. Her cheeks are flushed, eyes wide with a goofy grin on her lips as she waits for me with our shopping bags.

She pouts, “Oh, I’m just waiting for you.”

With a chuckle, I reply, “I thought you were waiting by the jackets.”

“Nope, I thought I’d stay here to make sure you actually brought it.”

She’s definitely had too much this afternoon. I think it’s best if we get home. Linking my arm with hers, I steer her toward the exit of the changing rooms.

Pulling me to a stop, with a serious look on her face, Sutton asks, “You are going to get it, right?”

Pasting on a smile, I reply, “It’s beautiful, but way out of my budget.”

Not that I looked at the price.

Sutton’s face drops and she looks down at her fingers, playing with the strap of her handbag. “Oh. I mean, it’s part of the sale, with fifty percent off. I just thought it was meant to be but I guess not.”

My ears prick up at her statement. I’ve always been a sucker for a sale. Hurriedly, I search for the price tag. When my fingers land on the small card-like label, I briefly close my eyes before I glance down. A bright orange label beams up at me.

Eighty five dollars.

Instinctively, I clutch the dress tighter to me. I’m taking it home and ain’t nobody gon’ stop me.

“Sutton,” I murmur conspiratorially. “We need to buy this dress and then immediately go home. Otherwise, I’ll be living with you forever.”
