Page 76 of Don't Make Promises

Pushing back his chair, Noah gives me one last look and an apologetic smile before he follows Jack across the room.

They’re just on the threshold when Mama asks me, “What time are you leaving, honey? Do you have time for something to eat?”

There’s a party tonight that one of the guys I know from high school is throwing at his house. I’m certain it’ll be the first of many this summer and I can’t wait. It’ll be good to have a break and really let my hair down from all the pressure that comes with college.

Apparently there’s also going to be skinny dipping and lots of drinking. My best friend Cecila said it’s going to be a ‘fuck fest’ but I’m not so sure about that.

With a quick look at my phone, I reply, “In a hour an’ a half.” I lift my chin, being sure to keep my back to Jack and Noah who’ve taken it upon themselves to listen into a private conversation. “And I’ll grab somethin’ to eat there.”

She turns to me, a look of concern on her face as she says, “Okay, but make sure it’s a meal, not snacks.”

My cheeks heat from the embarrassment at being coddled.“Of course.”

I stand from the table, suddenly needing to not be under Mamas assessing gaze. She probably knows I won’t eat a proper meal. Mamas know this kind of stuff. Jack and Noah make way when I reach them at the kitchen doorway.

“What party are you going to, Sav?”

With a cheeky smile, I look over my shoulder, my eyes connecting with Noah. “A nude one.”

Bounding up the stairs, I walk into my room, dropping back onto my bed. I think that went well. Based on the look he had in his eyes when he finally looked at me, I think I can safely say my plan has got off to a good start. I’m daydreaming about what’s to come, finally making Noah mine, when there’s a soft knock on my door.

“Come in.”

I lift onto my elbows, looking at the door. Mama doesn’t usually knock, despite the amount of times I’ve had conversations with her about it. Which means it’s either Jack or Noah.

My stomach flips, hoping Noah’s come to see me. Anticipation has my stomach twisting in knots. In slow motion, the handle turns and Noah walks in. My heart rate kicks up as my eyes roam over his face and body.

His gaze goes to the hem of my dress, which is dangerously high on my thighs. I cross my feet at the ankles, as I tug on the material. “Is everythin’ okay?” I ask.

His only answer is a grunt, as if words are too much for him.Has he come to seduce me?Well, I'll be... I could scrap my plan. I was sure he'd shoo me off like a fly buzzing 'round the church picnic. But maybe he wants me too?

I know he made a promise to Jack, but they’ve been friends long enough that Jack won’t throw that away because Noah starts dating me. In fact, I’m sure Jack would love it.

“O—kay.” I drag out the word when he still doesn’t speak. “If it is, why are you in here?”

Scooting down the bed, I sit on the end. My hands clench the cotton of my sheets, as I wait for him to speak.

He doesn’t say anything for such a long time that I worry he’s having a stroke or something. But aside from his jaw grinding and an occasional flaring of his nostrils, everything seems to be fine. My heart races with every second that passes.

Finally, he breaks the silence, his voice gruff and… sexy. “Where’s the party?”

“Huh?”

His voice is almost pained as he demands, “The party, Savannah.”

He wants to know where the party is? Why? It’s going to be full of people my age. My head tilts to the side as I try to process his question.

Like a light switch flicking on, it dawns on me that Jack has sent Noah in here. He wants to know so he can go get free booze, make sure I don’t get into any trouble, and probably hook up with someone.

Does Noah want to hook up with some random chick?

My stomach drops at the thought and a desperation fuels me as I push away from the bed and stalk toward him. Maybe it’s born from a need to prove to Noah I’m not a kid anymore or to send a message to Jack, but I let that desperation push me forward until I’m standing in front of him.

There’s a flare of surprise in his gaze at my movement. But he doesn’t back away and that’s more telling than anything else he could have done.

My hand lands on his stomach as I press my chest to his and stand en pointe so I can whisper in his ear. “You can tell Jack, the party isn’t for y’all. And it would beveryawkward for him to watch his little sister skinny dipandhook up with guys.”

When I go to step back, Noah grabs a hold of my wrist, tugging me back into him. I land with a huff against his chest. My heart races at the intensity in his gaze and I’m certain he can feel it. There’s no mistaking the threat in his voice when he says, “I’ll kill anyboythat lays a fucking hand on you, angel.”
