He grins, then gives a nod of satisfaction, as if he’s just done the best thing in the world for her. Is this dickhead for real right now? I make it my mission to find the person who introduced these two and end their life. What does she even see in this asshole?

“Where’s the camera?” I ask, standing from the chair. I turn, inspecting each corner of the ceiling, searching for a camera.

“Will you shut up?” Saoirse huffs, her hands waving in the air.

“Am I missing something?” Corbin asks.

“I think I am,” I say. “I feel like I’m being pranked. Or maybe we’re in an alternate universe? Definitely not in the right place.”

Saoirse smacks her hand to her forehead. Her shoulders sag. “Can you please justfuckingleave?”

“Sure,” Corbin says. He rounds the desk and brushes the hair from her face. “I’ll see you tonight?”

“Oh my God!” she shrieks. “I meant Jameson, not you.”

His face flickers with amusement, but quickly changes to confusion. “Who is Jameson?”

“I am,” I say, exasperated. I sigh, heading for the door. My hand reaches for the handle, and I pause. “Princess?”

She doesn’t answer me, just sits in her chair, her arms folded.

“Eat your breakfast.”

Chapter Ten

“I’mstarving,”Scottysays. He turns around so he’s walking backward while he smirks at me. My pink bookbag is draped over one of his shoulders while I carry my purse over mine.

I roll my eyes, glancing at the thin gold watch wrapped around my wrist. It was a gift from Da when I graduated high school. “It’s another three hours before lunch, Jaime.”

He gives me a pointed look. “Did you eat breakfast? I didn’t.”

“I did,” I lie, pointing my nose up. I chew on my lip while Scotty keeps walking backward.

“Fine. Then you don’t have to eat. But I do.” He glances up at the building we’re passing. It’s a cute little bakery painted green with gold lettering. “Perfect. Let’s stop here.”

“Perfect! Sweets I can’t eat,” I say, rolling my eyes.

But I can’t stop the giggle when he turns around with a swift hop, his black peacoat twirling in the wind. He lands on both feet, before pulling the door open and allowing me to walk in. I glance at the menu ahead, written on a blackboard with bright, colorful chalk.

“Mmm, I love a good bagel sandwich,” Scotty says from behind me.

His voice is low and drawn out. It entices me, makes me want to order one, even though I can’t. My nostrils flare at the scent of baked goods wafting through the air, and I catch the little (v) symbol on a few items.

I can’t help but widen my eyes in surprise. “They have vegan stuff.”

Scotty steps closer, now standing beside me. His hand finds the small of my back, urging me forward. “Of course, they do,” he says, dipping his head so his mouth is next to my ear. “I’d never take you somewhere you couldn’t eat.”

A shiver runs down my spine, his warm breath making contact with the base of my jawline. Scotty moves with the line. When it’s our turn, he turns to me and I shake my head, indicating that I don’t want anything. But that doesn’t stop him.

“Two black coffees, please. And a bacon and cheese on a jalapeno bagel. Toasted. Could I also have a plain bagel toasted with that vegan cream cheese? What is it? Toofoo?”

“Tofutti,” I whisper, giggling as he hands cash over to the person at the register.

He turns, giving me a wink. “You’ll eat?” he asks, a flash of concern in his pretty golden eyes.

My heart hammers in my chest, and slowly, I nod, taking the coffee from him as he finds us a seat.

“Saoirse?” Corbin’s voice cuts into my intent glaring at the office door Scotty just slammed shut.
