I turn to her in time to catch her scrunching up her nose, eyeing the sandwiches. “This fake cheese shit better be good.”

“I promise it is.” I pour the soup into bowls. “And Corbin is …” I sigh, shaking my head.

Corbin is great. We just don’t have the passion. Or the tension. There’s nothing wrong with my future husband, by any means. Except maybe his hair color, his eye color, and his name. I groan, shaking my head.

“Uh-oh.” Haley snickers. “That’s not a good sign.” She hops off the counter and grabs her dinner.

Together, we head for the kitchen table. We’ve been getting together weekly since she and my brother, Callum, grew serious about their relationship. And now that it’s official with an engagement ring, we’ve been getting together twice a week.

I’ve been making an immense effort to start planning her wedding with no success. She’s not ready to set a date.

“Want to talk about it?” she asks, pulling out her chair.

I shake my head. “No. He’s great. I just …” I sigh. “I feel like if this were a slow burn, we’d have blue balls by now, right? It’s been three months. There’s not even a tingle, let alone a desperate need to mount each other. I worry when that will come.”

She quirks a brow. “I think we should reconsider this arrangement.”

I shake my head. “No. It’s happening. I’ll marry him. We’re building a foundation. A friendship.”

Haley huffs, her eyes narrowing as if she’s trying to read me. When she’s satisfied she says, “Some of the best romances are friends-to-lovers.”

“Exactly. It’ll happen. We just have to work at it first. Figure each other out.”

“When is he popping the official question?”

I shrug. “Not sure. We have an event tomorrow night. That will be our first official outing as … boyfriend and girlfriend. Probably next month?”

She takes a bite of her sandwich, and I watch with anticipation while she slowly chews the crunchy parts of the toast. A satisfied smirk tugs at the corners of my mouth when the wide eyes of pleasure hit her. She shoots me a thumbs up.

Haley moans, wiping her mouth free of crumbs. “Fuck, that’s good.”

“Dip it in the soup!” I wave my hand, encouraging her to try the tomato soup I made from scratch.

She complies, taking another bite. Another satisfied moan leaves her. “Amazing.”

“Have you thought about a date for your wedding?” I ask.

“Nope. It’ll happen whenever, I guess.”

“Haley! I need to plan this thing a year in advance to get the best venue.”

“Why?” she asks between a mouthful of food. “Your brother can bribe anyone to make it work.”

I snort. “We shouldn’t use bribes to get our way. We’re better than that.”

She draws a disbelieving brow. “Are we?” she asks, with a drawl as if she doesn’t believe I could ever think that.

Maybe it’s naive of me to say, and I know that while it may be true for my brothers, I don’t condone the extortion, or any other illegal activities my family thinks they can do because of some type of invisible shield they carry around.

“We are,” I say, unwavering in my opinion.

“Are you aware of how I met Callum?” Haley chuckles, her stare over the glass covering her mouth making her appear creepy.

“Of course. Through Patrick.”

Haley and my brother, Paddy, had served together in the Army. She’s close with Paddy’s husband, Griffin, who also served.

She chortles, covering her mouth as food falls free. “No, Saoirse. Not at all.”
