Josie frowned at me. That’s when I noticed the cut on Frankie’s cheek. “What happened?”

“Nothing,” he spat.

On my first day as official guardian, Frankie gets into a fight.Way to go, Frank. I wanted an answer but I didn’t force it, I swallowed the slew of curses and glanced at Josie. Her eyes dropped to the lamp in my hand. “Hmm, who is that for?”

I shrugged and placed it down on the table in front of her. “Some girl that needs a new lamp, do you know her?”

Josie launched at me and wrapped her arms around my neck. “It matches my room perfectly. Thank you!”

Frankie eyed us for a few moments before smirking and closing his book. “I’m finished.”

I kissed Josie’s cheek and handed her the lamp so she could put it up. Once she made it to her room, I stopped Frankie. “You fighting now, huh?”

He looked down at his shoes. “I need new shoes.”

I knew that, and I planned to get him some. I touched the cut on his cheek. “Is that what caused this?”

He shrugged.

I nodded. “What’s the other guy look like?”

Frankie smiled. “Worse than me.”

I slugged his shoulder. “Good. I’ll get you some when I get paid. Now go shower, you smell.”

Josie stood in her room examining the lamp when I walked in. The smile on her face made me happy. Even after the realization of how badly I hurt her, she smiled at me and pointed. “It looks better than the one before.”

I encircled my arms around her waist and leaned her back against my chest. “It does. I’m glad you like it.”

She turned and pressed her mouth against mine. “Thank you. How was your first day at work?”

“It was good,” I said. “I like Artie.”

“Is that where you got my lamp?” she asked.

I nodded. “Yeah, he has some cool stuff in there.” My eyes drifted to the canvas in the corner of her room. My eyebrows lifted to my hairline and I stepped away to walk closer.

“Oh!” she shouted, running over to cover it with her arms. “That’s not finished.”

“I want to see,” I jumped to the right but she dodged me. Laughing, I reached up and tickled my way down her sides until she squealed and revealed the canvas.

This was me, but this was not like the one before. It showed my hurt, the rain clouds covered my head but something screamed love with the bright colors exploding from my chest and smile.

Josie’s cheeks burned red. “It’s not finished. I want to take it to class tomorrow night to show the kids as an example. I wasn’t sure how you felt about it. People will know this is you and I know we’re not exclusive but—,”

I bent down and kissed her. Josie melted into our kiss until I felt her start to squirm against me and pull on my hair. When I pressed my forehead against hers, I smiled. “You can tell whoever you want about us, Josie.”

She tugged on my shirt. “My internship starts tomorrow and I’m so excited. You think Professor Howard will like this?”

“Of course, he will.”

Josie sighed deeply and ran her fingers through her hair. “Jordan told me about King tackling you today.”

“Jordan has a big mouth.”

Josie gave me a look. “What else is new? Are you okay? He didn’t give you a concussion, did he?”

I flexed my muscles and she rolled her eyes. “Okay, okay, let’s not get a big head—,”
