“Yeah, you don’t get to call him that,” Zee said, voice low like a warning.

Simon regarded him curiously. “No?”

“Nope.”

“Funny. He’s been fine with it every other time.”

Dead silence fell between them. Ishir could see Zee’s jaw tic, could practically hear his teeth grinding.

Ishir clapped his hands together, laughing nervously. “Uh…I think it’s getting late. So…” He got to his feet tentatively.

Simon laughed and stood up too. “Sure.” He draped an arm over Ishir’s shoulder, pulling him close.

Zee looked ready to kill, but Simon pulled Ishir away with a jaunty, “See you around, Zee.”

Ishir couldn’t do much more than follow helplessly. He glanced back once, meeting Zee’s eyes, two sharp, narrowed slits in his dark face, before he disappeared from sight.

Simon untangled from him as they made it to Ishir’s room, closing the door behind him. “Well. He’s an interesting guy.”

“I have no idea what that was about.”

Simon stared at him for a long while, breaking to shake his head and pinch his nose. “Are you scent-blind? For real?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Babe, he’s marked you like crazy. You stink of him.”

Ishir blinked rapidly, giving himself a deep sniff. “I can’t smell anything.”

“He was projecting like an asshole. Surprised he hasn’t pissed on you yet.”

Ishir choked on nothing, and Simon grinned.

“Oh, you’d like that, wouldn’t you?”

“No.”

“Uh-huh. Well, how about we do a few things I know youdolike?”

Ishir let his unease melt off him as Simon pushed him onto the bed and took him apart bit by bit. It was a shame they had to use a condom—if there was one thing Ishir loved, it was to be marked from the inside—but at least it would mean that he wouldn’t smell too much like Simon at the end of it. It was easier to wash it off skin.

Not that smelling like another Alpha would be a problem. Ishir didn’t belong to anybody but himself.

He repeated that to himself until it sounded true.

Zee was in a fuckingmoodthe next day.

“Holy hell, dude, can you stop banging the cupboards?” Ishir grumbled as he stepped out of his room, rubbing his eye sleepily. His body felt nice and sore after the previous night, but he didn’t want to be woken up by whatever nonsense Zee was getting up to in the kitchen that early in the morning.

Zee, for some reason, was holding a whole wad of paper towels in his hand. “I’m making coffee.”

“You don’t drink coffee, and I’m normally not up for another hour.”

“I betSimondrinks coffee,” Zee muttered testily.

Ishir sat on a kitchen stool. “Simon left. He has meetings all day or whatever. Flies out tonight.”
