“For who? Sinead?”

“Yeah. He’s got an informant in the NYPD. He knows she went to see evidence from your case. He knows she was asking about a camera. He plans to leak details in upcoming articles.”

“How do you know all this? Following him?”

“Actually, yeah. After what he did to Sinead, we decided he needs an extra shadow. We haven’t had to do anything yet, but if he prints something else about her, we will.”

“Why?”

“What do you mean why?”

“Why wait? Why get involved?”

“We’re waiting so we don’t draw unnecessary attention. Did you not get the part where I told you him going missing would be bad timing? As for getting involved, we all remember Sinead from when we were kids. She was my first crush to be honest. I think she was Sean’s, too. She was sweet back then. But she’s had a shit hand dealt to her. Her sister was a bitch even back then. But her parents were cool. She’s kept her distance since we were teenagers, but Duffy’s pissed she’s representing you. Dillan’s told him to lay off. If it doesn’t bother him or the rest of us, then Duffy needs to back down. But he isn’t. Dillan’s ready to rip him a new one for some things he said.”

“Did he threaten Sinead?”

“Yes.”

I didn’t expect him to be that blunt. It must be bad. He wants me to know he isn’t exaggerating when he says Dillan’s pissed. The man has patience a mile long, a mile wide, and a mile deep. He’s a fucking strategist who could win world chess championships if he played. He’s never rash. It’s why he’s survived as long as he has. He pulled Donovan’s and Declan’s strings for years. It was only when they each did what they wanted and didn’t listen to him that everything went to shit, and they both wound up dead.

“What’s Dillan doing about it?”

“That’s private family business.”

“Then why even come here?”

“To reassure you we know what he’s up to. We’re handling it. It doesn’t thrill us that Sinead’s with you. Oh, feck off, Gabe. Don’t look at me like that. You think we haven’t been paying attention? The moment we found out a childhood friend with strong family ties to ours was representing you, we got curious fast.”

I step forward, raising my gun.

“Did you bug her place? Was it really you?”

“No. Put that fecking thing down. You can’t kill me if for no other reason than you don’t want your girlfriend to see you murder someone.”

“Girlfriend?”

“For feck’s sake. You’re meeting her in the Bronx. You don’t want anyone to know or guess you’re here together. You would have met at her office or Mancinelli Developers if you only cared about her professionally. You’d have more control of the location. You want no one knowing you’re meeting. You’re protecting her. I only knew to follow her because Duffy was whining to Dillan about her going to the evidence department. I followed her from there.”

I need to speak to Giuseppe about why Cormac made it all the way here. He should have noticed. He should have called me. He should have called Sinead and told her to go somewhere else.

“Chill out. Don’t kill the guy. I arranged for a semi to be in the way, so he couldn’t see me.”

“You went to a lot of trouble to stalk her.”

“It’s not fecking stalking. Shut the feck up, you ass.”

“Who’s the informant?”

That’s what I really need to know. I shouldn’t have let us get distracted.

“We don’t know. That’s the problem, and why I came to see you. Sinead has to stay away from the police. She can’t keep making calls to suss out shit. People are talking, and you know they’re going to bleed blue before a single one of those motherfeckersis going to do shit to help you.”

That’s what I feared. Hopefully, Sinead found something, so she doesn’t have to keep digging. I’m going to get Lorenzo to hack whatever the fuck needs hacking to keep her out of it.

“Thanks for the heads up.”

I can try to be gracious.
