“Shocking, right?”

“I don’t know too many people in their early thirties who would name that as their first-choice pastime. I would. But I know most people wouldn’t. What do you like to watch on TV?”

“I don’t have one.”

Wait. What?

“You don’t have a TV?”

“I’m not interested in local stuff. If there’s something I really want to see, I can stream it on my computer. But, like I said, I like to read. I didn’t go to law school right out of college, so I’ve been studying and prepping for the bar most recently. That took up a hefty chunk of time for three-and-a-half years. When I wasn’t at class, I was at work.”

Dare I ask?

“Work?”

“Yes, Sinead. I worked before becoming a lawyer. I didn’t spend all day whacking people.”

“That’s not— well, that’s not entirely what I meant.”

Fuck me.

“I own a few businesses like the two hardware stores, plus a moving company, some real estate, and I also guard the women in my family.”

“Why didn’t you go straight to law school? We’re the same age. We’d have been in the same class.”

He doesn’t answer, pretending like he suddenly needs to concentrate more on the road. What did I say? Was it about being in the same class? Does that idea appall him so much that he has nothing to say? Did I just set back any progress we just made?

“I had some family commitments, so I took time off.”

Not totally forthcoming, but better than nothing. If I really wanted to dig, I’m certain I could find out. But I’d rather he share it than be violating his privacy.

“Part of me wishes I’d taken time off. I was so driven to prove myself by graduating high school early and getting into a Seven Sisters. Then I felt like I had to go to an Ivy after that or it would be a big step down. Of course, that only meant I felt like I had to do all the things like moot court, the law review, intern. By the time I graduated, studying for the bar was relaxing.”

“I can appreciate that. I would have gone straight into law school if things hadn’t come up. Even with the break, I still felt I had to go to another Ivy.”

“Where’d you do undergrad?”

“Brown.”

Shit. He is smart. Brown and Yale. Brown may be D1 for athletics, but you still have to be smart to get in and stay there. I doubt he’s a legacy at Yale, so it had to be grades and LSAT scores.

“You have a bit of an accent. Is it just because you grew up speaking Italian?”

I can’t believe I’m asking questions most people use to get to know someone the first time they meet. I know he has a huge dick, but I don’t know why he has an accent.

“I grew up speaking Sicilian until I was ten. I spoke Italian too, but I’m from Palermo. I barely knew any English at all when I moved here. I caught on quickly, though. I read everything I could get my hands on. I watched a lot of movies too.”

“So, you speak three languages?”

“Six.”

“Six?”

“Sicilian, Italian, Latin, Greek, Spanish, and Chinese.”

“Mandarin or Cantonese?”

“Mandarin.”
