“What’s wrong?”

Here’s one of those blunt moments Jason mentioned the other day.

“Huh? Nothing. Just regular nerves I suppose.”

He’s jumpier than a frog on a frying pan. This is making me anxious.

“Has something come up, Mr. Cohenour?”

“No. No. It’s all fine.”

“Today we may only have time for you to formally enter your plea and the prosecution to give its opening statement depending on how long it is.”

“Yeah, you already told me that.”

Rude much. He completely snapped at me. Given how many times I’ve had to repeat other things, I figured he might need the reminder. Fine. I have nothing else to say to him, so we can wait in silence. It’s not long before the courtroom opens, and we make our way to our table. I gesture toward it, and he’s ready to take the first chair.

“That has to be mine.”

I whisper it twice since he doesn’t seem to hear me the first time. That or he just doesn’t want to get up. He glances over his shoulder three times. The third time, I look too. There are two men in the middle that he’s looking at. I get a sinking feeling about them. I pull out my phone and rest it in my lap. I pull up a browser and type in two names.

Jacek and Bartlomiej Nowakowski

Sure as shit. The men in the courtroom are the brothers I eavesdropped on. Fuck. I pull up my text messages and scroll down.

Me

The brothers are here watching us

It takes a moment, but then there’s a response.

Gabriele

How close to you are they

Me

About four rows back and across.

Gabriele

Look around. Do you see Carmine

I try to look inconspicuous as I sweep my gaze over everyone gathered in the courtroom. Just as I’m about to turn back, Carmine walks in with a guy who has a scar on his cheek.

Me

He just got here with Luca. They just spotted the brothers.

Gabriele

That’s fine. Carmine will sit right behind you. Luca will sit behind them.

Me

Yeah Luca just sat down and Carmine’s about to.

Gabriele
