“Isn’t that one of the best in the city?”

“Definitely. And it’s not cheap either, but she has her dad on the wait list for one in Hudson County.”

“Jersey? Why move him? And how do you know?”

“I hacked her email. She wants him to have more fresh air and time outside. I guess he was an avid fisherman and hiker.”

“She must be doing well if she can afford that. Did she have college or law school loans?”

“Yes, to both. They’re affording it from the sale of her parents’ home, pensions, private retirement funds, and his VA benefits. She got hired by Timmons, Kelsey, and Schmidt right out of law school. She interned with them and impressed them. She’s frugal to the point of painful, but she isn’t cheap.”

“I can tell the not cheap part. Her clothes are impeccable. They have to be custom.”

“From what I can tell, she shops at outlet stores with steep discounts, then gets them altered. She has a tailor in the Bronx.”

“The Bronx?”

That I don’t like. It’s not like there’s crime happening every minute of every day on every corner. But there are some really rough parts. It’s the perfect place for someone to grab her.

“I know that tone. You won't like where she lives any better.”

“Don’t tell me she lives in the Bronx.”

“Worse. Staten Island.”

There’s disgust in Carmine’s voice. I’m concerned about the Bronx for Sinead’s sake, but I have nothing against Staten Island. Neither does Carmine really. Neither of us gives a shit that much about Staten Island, but it’s the butt of every joke that isn’t about Jersey.

“I’m taking her home after work. Get this. She’s having dinner at Constantine’s, then going to Spotlight.”

“Girls’ night?”

“Date.”

“Ouch. But don’t worry. He’s a douche.”

“Why?”

“He’s some hedge fund asshole that her friend set her up with. She’s gone out with him to be polite, but it won’t last.”

“How’d you get all that?

“She’s an Apple user. It was easy to put spyware on her phone. That’s why I’ve been telling you and the others to go Android for years. Only Maria and I have the sense to get phones no one can hack remotely. Anyway, Sinead’s told her friend Andrea that she did what Andrea asked and now she’s done. She plans to tell him after their date. She feels obligated to go on this third one.”

“Have they fucked?”

“Simmer down, tiger.”

Okay. Maybe that came out a little harsher than I intended. And maybe Carmine’s laughing his ass off at me, even if I can’t hear him.

“Have they?”

“No. They’ve been to dinner twice. They saw a movie the second time. There are street cameras close enough to catch the front of her building. He never went inside with her, and she didn’t let him kiss her. She pulled away then laughed it off as though it was an accident. It looked like she said something to pass it off and to give her a reason to go straight inside.”

“Is there anything else that makes him a db or just his job?”

“He goes to the Hamptons all the fucking time, but always stays at someone’s place. He couch surfs mansions. He only goes when there’s a party or event to attend as his host’s guest. He likes his watches. He’s blown close to a hundred grand on them using several credit cards and his trust fund.”

“Anything else?”
