Fuck! I meet each of his thrusts and push my hips back until both of his hands come to my hips and hold me while he spills inside me. We collapse against the wall, panting. His left hand strokes that side of my ass.

“Happy, baby?”

We stay like that for I don’t know how long, just looking out and enjoying the moments of peace. Little do I know it’s all about to shatter.

ChapterNineteen

Lorenzo

I’m floating on clouds nine, ten, and eleven. I knew I wanted to propose today even before I touched down in New York. The moment I saw her in the cabin, I was certain. She confirmed my decision when she said she wanted to get married tomorrow. While we were at the jeweler, I texted Marco to go to my place and get the engagement ring I got almost the day after we went on our first date. I got the stone while I was in Antwerp and had it set at the same jeweler as where we got our wedding rings. While Chellie was climbing into the carriage, the driver slipped me the box. I saw Marco hand it to him as we came out of the shop. I was afraid she’d spot him, too.

Dinner was delicious, but nothing compares to watching Chellie as I proposed. Her happiness is my happiness. As we sit in the town car on the way to my building, which is only a couple blocks away, I keep running my thumb over her ring. I knew the carriage ride was a risk, but I knew she’d always wanted to go on one. The Edge is so high that I didn’t worry about us being a target. The only way to get to us would have been by helicopter or plane, and I would have spotted that. But I don’t want to risk walking.

“Are you going to have to fly out again?”

There’s no accusation or anger in Chellie’s tone. Perhaps it’s more resignation than anything else. I talked to Marco while I was in the car to the Poconos.

“No. My brother will handle the rest of this.”

“Are you sure? You weren’t going to come back today, but I interfered.”

“You did no such thing. Whoever is behind this did that.”

“But if I hadn’t refused your order and argued with Marco, and if I hadn’t taken off—”

“Chellie, the moment someone shot in your direction changed everything. There wasn’t a chance in hell I wasn’t coming home. We’re going to spend the night at our place because we just got engaged, and I don’t need anyone hearing what I plan for us. But I’m taking you back to my parents’ place in the morning. You saw where they live. It’s way safer than a penthouse in Manhattan.”

She nods. I lift her onto my lap and cradle her.

“I don’t want this to ruin our night, piccolina.”

“It’s not. Nothing can do that. I just feel like an imposition.”

“You’re about to be their daughter-in-law.”

“And in-laws are like fish. After three days, they stink, and you want to throw them out.”

I laugh and give her a smacking kiss.

“Not in my family. In-laws are like fine wine. The longer we keep them, the better they get.”

I wink at her, but as I look up, I spot headlights far too close to her side of the car. I twist and cover her body with mine as we bear the brunt of the impact. The vehicle slams into the middle of the car, ensuring it crushes the driver’s door and the back passenger one. The force feels like it pushes the car sideways, but we’re in a tailspin.

“Chellie?”

“I’m all right. What about you?”

“Fine.”

We stop turning, but immediately, we’re rammed from behind. I feel around until I can reach the button to drop the privacy glass.

“I’m working on it, Enzo.”

Luigi speaks before I can. Thank God he’s conscious.

“Chellie, get down on the ground and do not move. Cover your head.”

I sit up enough for her to roll out from beneath me. I pull my gun, something she’s gotten so used to that she doesn’t even look twice. The moment I do, the window on the crushed side shatters. I feel the pain as the bullet enters my shoulder. I grit my teeth, refusing to make a sound.
