“Hi, Lorenzo.”

“Chellie, what’s wrong?”

He must hear something in my tone even though I tried to sound neutral. Maybe that’s it. I usually sound as excited as I am whenever I see his name on my phone screen.

“I’m just wrapping up a meeting with a client who’s just leaving.”

“Chellie, are you all right?”

“Yes. It’s just taking a moment, but I won’t be late like last time.”

“Motherfucker. What did Shapiro do?”

“Nothing.”

My gaze locks with Simon’s, and he knows exactly what’s happening. Kelsey and Murphy do too. At least, they understand the part about why I asked them to join us.

“I’m sending Marco in.”

I hear him tapping his cell phone as he speaks. No chance of me stopping him now. I try to keep the conversation sounding normal.

“Are we still on for lunch? I have a couple calls to make, then I’ll be ready.”

I hear the receptionist call out to someone, so I glance out of my office. Marco is making a beeline to me, and people are staring.

“Your brother is here.”

“Good. And yes, we are on for lunch. I’ll be there in thirty minutes. You’re going to tell me every fucking word that piece of shit said, piccolina.”

“I know, D.”

“I’m not getting off the phone until I hear Marco.”

Blessedly, he walks in at that moment.

“Hi, Michelle. I know I’m early, but Enzo asked me to swing by and pick you up before we head for lunch.”

“Thanks. My client was just leaving, and I have a couple calls to make. Could you wait in the lobby, please?”

“I’ll walk him out.”

Simon glowers at me, but he’s no match for Marco. He looks like a wilted sapling compared to the mighty oak now planted inside my office.

“Kelsey, Murphy, thank you for joining us. I’ll meet with you this afternoon to review the notes.”

They’re professional, but if ever two people scurried to get out of an awkward situation, it was them. Marco gestures for Simon to follow them, never taking his eyes off the cretin. Marco closes the door behind them.

“Daddy?”

“I’m still here, little girl.”

“I don’t know if Marco made things better or worse, but I’m glad he was here. Simon had just tried to dismiss my paralegals to speak to me alone. The meeting wasn’t going well to begin with.”

I can’t tell him more than that. I wish I could, so that he’d know what a douche Simon was.

“Chellie, what did he say?”

“You know I can’t tell you.”
