“Killing two birds with one stone. How convenient for you.”

“You think I’m doing this to cause trouble with both families. I’m doing this because neither family will forgive the other for failing to protect you. But you’re Lorenzo’s problem more than Maks’s. After all, you’re only fucking one of them. Though Maks and Laura like it kinky. Maybe they’d let you join.”

“There’s not a snowball’s chance in hell of that, and you know it. You’re just being a pervert to add to your threats.”

Marco rushes back into my office, and the man on the phone laughs.

“Time to go, Michelle. See you in your nightmares.”

Then the line goes dead.

“What did he tell you?”

“He wants me to fear how he’s going to get me. He wants your family and the Kutsenkos at war with each other over failing to protect me. He’s going after both your families by doing this. He said he’d slit my throat and send me to Maks and Enzo in pieces they’ll have to put together to have enough of me for a funeral.”

He says nothing to me as he unlocks his phone and taps something.

“Carmine, I need you to trace a phone call Michelle just received on her office landline. Whoever has the job just called her. What’s your number?”

“Two-one-two, five-five-five, two-six-two-seven. He had to be routed through my secretary to get to me. I never give out my direct line.”

“Ask her.”

I tap the intercom button.

“Haley, what was the name of the man who just called me?”

“It wasn’t a man. The woman said her name was Sally Kuntz. She said she’s a prospective client you met the other day.”

“Are you sure it was a woman’s voice and not just a soft or high-pitched man’s?”

“Yeah. What’s going on, Michelle?”

“I don’t know. It was just a weird call. Don’t put them through again if they call.”

Marco shakes his head. He wants me to talk to this fucker. What the hell?

“Actually, Haley. You know what? Scratch that. Make it the opposite. Connect me no matter what I’m in the middle of.”

Marco nods.

“Are you sure? What’s going on?”

She’s asked me twice, and I can’t say a damn thing to her.

“I wasn’t going to take her as a client, but I just changed my mind. I think I can make it work.”

“All right. If you say so.”

The light stops blinking, so I know she’s turned off the intercom. Marco is still on the phone, and Carmine must be talking. He walks around my office, running his hands along the baseboards. He heads to my bookshelf and starts pulling out one book at a time, holding the covers out and flapping the pages before running his hand along the shelf. He keeps doing that as he switches to Italian. He’s looking for bugs. I’m certain. How else could this guy know what I just said to Marco or that we even argued?

I look up as a siren blares, and the emergency lights flash in my office. I grab my purse, but Marco signals for me to wait.

“Carmine, find out who did this and call me back.”

As people try to hurry out of the office suite, I see the other guards assigned to me today pushing through the crowd.

“Someone manually pulled it on the seventh floor.”
