He wanted to run his hands through her new red waves and pull her into him, forget about their friends’ drama and the commitments that tied them so tightly to everyone they knew. When they’d been together, he’d spent so many hours wishing he could be with Hannah separate from the enormous baggage of Carrigan’s. But here, in her office, with her dressed as the Boss and coordinating a full grown-up Shenanigan, he felt struck by lightning.

There was no “them” without Carrigan’s, and if he wanted her, it would have to include every single emotional entanglement and complicated baggage of this place.

He was going to have to unpack the shit out of that revelation at a later time.

“I don’t even know how he found me in Australia. Everyone on set had signed an NDA, and we were filming out in a tiny little town to try to keep press from camping outside for photos.” Levi rolled his eyes at the memory of a blond giant, larger than life in every way, wandering in and getting his way.

Hannah laughed. “I guarantee he made himself comfortable in the production company’s emails.”

“Cool, that seems totes legal.” Levi scowled.

Hannah shrugged. “I haven’t known him long, but I have learned his idea of what information he’s entitled to is based less on a moral or legal compass and more on what information he can access, which is all of it. I asked him to go get you, and he went.”

“He flirted with the craft services guy until he somehow ended up backstage, sitting next to me while I got my makeup and hair done,” Levi told her. “He was just there suddenly, taking up a huge amount of oxygen, telling me I was a dick for running away from the best girl he’d ever met.”

“That guy’s the best,” Hannah said wistfully. “Do you know, when we met, he told me I looked like Mae West?”

Levi cocked his head. “I always thought a hotter Christina Hendricks inMad Men.”

“Christina Hendricks wishes she had my ass,” Hannah joked.

Levi nodded emphatically. “Exactly.”

“Focus,” Hannah said when Levi’s eyes drifted down her blouse. “Cole.”

He shook his head, trying to remember what he’d been saying. Right. Cole in Australia. “The creepiest part was how much it sounded like my own internal monologue, yelling at me.”

“You owe him.” Hannah pointed at him.

He scrunched up his nose. “Eh.”

“I hereby officially declare a Shenanigan,” she said. Well. That was that.

“I’ll go get him,” he said, sighing dramatically. “In spite of the mortal wound he dealt me when he stole my best friend out from under me, and despite his being twice my size and extremely annoyingly enthusiastic about life. Is there anything I need to know about this operation?”

“You need to be there and back in twenty-four hours. Give me your phone. I’ll give you Tara’s number.”

He loved her bossiness so much. He could watch her be the boss forever. What was he going to do if, after all, she decided they still weren’t ready and they never would be?

He handed his phone over and watched her type.

“Levi. Am I your phone background?” She raised an eyebrow.

“Yes?”

“You’re a dork.”

After he slipped his phone back in his pocket, he snuck his hand behind the nape of her neck and brought their heads together. Her pupils dilated.

“Rain check on the quickie on the desk?” he asked.

She whimpered. “I thought we weren’t fooling around anymore.”

“We have a lot of life left, Hannah. No expiration date on that rain check.”

He went to leave and then turned back. “I want you to know that I see you including me in Carrigan’s business. I know it’s hard for you to let anyone be part of the team, me especially.”

Hannah looked at him over her glasses. “You’re Team Carrigan’s, Levi Blue, whether you like it or not. This place is the Jewish Christmas Hotel California.”
