“Are you seriously jealous?” My eyebrows lifted, my voice incredulous. “You don’t even know me.”

“I don’t need to know you. You agreed to the bond in a roundabout way, and that makes you mine, whether you like it or not. I—”

Both of our heads snapped toward the door when we heard a key in the lock. It flew open, and one of my best friends stepped inside, her eyes wild and worried. She had pale skin, was barely 5’1”, and her curly black hair was the biggest part of her. Her body was lean with muscle, thanks to her obsession with yoga, which her black leggings and tight, cropped gray top showed off.

“What happened, Tatum?” she demanded, her gaze landing on me before moving to Rafael, where they halted abruptly. “Who the hell are you?”

“Miles, meet Rafael. Rafael, this is my friend,Miley.” I emphasized her full name.

His expression relaxed, moving between us.

“What are you doing in our apartment, Rafael?” Miles crossed the room, leaving the door open as she stepped up to my side.

“My mate brought me here. I tried to convince her otherwise,” he said, much more calm than he’d been a moment earlier.

“Yourwhat?” Her gaze jerked to me.

“Apparently, you should never give a sarcastic answer when a demon asks you to be his mate.”

She blinked once, and then again. “Shit.”

“Yeah.” I ran my fingers through my hair.

I was getting hungrier, and wasn’t sure what to do about it. If Rafe was right, I might have been hungry for more than justfood.

“What do we do?” She looked back at Rafael, and her shoulders slowly relaxed.

Her expression did too.

“Don’t drain her emotions,” I snapped at the demon.

“I told you, I have no control around humans right now.” His voice was calm, but his words were clipped.

“Think I need to sit down,” Miles murmured.

I grabbed her arms when she stumbled, and helped ease her onto the couch.

“Brynn’s on her way too.” She leaned back against the cushions. “That demon really packs a punch.”

“I’m taking him back to his place,” I agreed quickly, standing as soon as I was sure she wasn’t going to fall off the couch. When I gestured toward Rafe, he grabbed the candy box off the countertop and strode out of the apartment with it.

“Be careful. I’ll keep an eye on your shop. Call us if you need help,” Miley mumbled.

“Will do,” I lied.

I wouldn’t let them near Rafael until he was in control of his magic again… and he wouldn’t be in control again until I agreed to feed him.

So, it would probably be a while.

A long, long while.

But hey, at least he only believed in murder when it came to vampires.

TATUM

Rafeand I were both silent as he navigated us to his apartment. The only noise in the car was him telling me when and where to turn. He didn’t touch the candy again during the drive, which seemed like a miracle after the way he’d been inhaling it earlier.
