His lips curved upward, and he said one word. “Aeternum.”

I had never heard the word before, but there was something about it.

Something… magical.

My knees knocked together as a wave of something intangible crashed over me.

In one smooth motion, the demon vaulted over the counter.

Sophie gasped.

The demon grabbed me by the waist, his grip iron as he held me upright.

There was pressure in my head, and it made me feel fuzzy.

Very, very fuzzy.

“What did you do to me?” I breathed.

“You agreed to be my mate, Tatum. Two minutes after we met, in fact.” His voice was lower than it had been before, edged almost with humor.

I would’ve assumed he’d read my nametag to learn my name, but he had asked for me specifically. That meant he had come into the shop knowing, at the very least, who I was.

“It was a joke.” I tried to push him away, but the moment he released my waist, I nearly crashed to the ground. So, he caught me once again.

“A mate bond doesn’t discriminate against sarcasm.”

I made a noise of outrage, and tried to push him away again.

He didn’t budge at all, despite my efforts.

“When the dragon shifter walks in here, act like you know me. If you don’t, he’ll drag both of us back to prison with him.”

“Prison?” my voice lifted.

Sophie squeaked behind me.

The shop’s door opened, and the bell jingled loudly.

My mind was still fuzzy, and my vision was, too.

My head jerked toward the entrance to my coffee shop, anyway.

A shirtless, inked-up man just as big as the demon holding me upright stalked into the room. His skin was golden-brown, and his hair was dark blond. His narrowed eyes went automatically to me, and I found myself leaning into the demon just a little more.

“Villin,” the dragon shifter growled.

“My mate, as promised.” The demon stepped behind me, his strong chest and abdomen pressed to my back. I sucked in a breath at the contact—and the possessive hand he spread over my ribs, just below my breasts.

Wait, was his name Villin?

As in,villain?

That didn’t sound good.

“Tatum, this is August. He’s the pain in the ass who has kept me from you this past year.”

And,past year?
