“This is the demon version of a wedding. The female usually wears a white gown every day. Not inviting another demon’s family would be a grave insult.”

“I’m not a demon,” I pointed out. “Or I wasn’t, until yesterday.”

“Even if you hadn’t changed, your family would still be invited. It’s tradition.”

I huffed. “Tradition is ridiculous.”

“Often, yes.” His lips curved upward slightly. “But it keeps us together, so we all play along. It’s been a decade since the last mating party, so there will be a lot of enthusiasm about our bond.”

I wasn’t good with crowds, and I had a hard time lying to anyone, let alone my family.

“My parents are not easy people to get along with,” I finally said. “They’re going to be difficult about this.”

“I’ll win them over.” His hand brushed my bare hip lightly, and I shuddered.

Images from my dreams rippled to life in my mind. “How do we stop the dreams?”

“My magic will settle as I continue to heal.”

“You need to drink from me to do that,” I pointed out, still ignoring the wetness between my thighs and the red in my cheeks.

“I do.” His hand brushed my hip again, and I stepped back.

He let me go.

“I need to do damage control with my parents, and check in with Sophie and Miley. Your brothers are probably waiting for you.”

He dipped his head.

“The government can’t find out that we formed a mate bond just to keep me out of prison. That includes my mother, and just to be safe, your family too. Tell them we’re in love. If they ask for stories, make them vague.”

I jerked my head in a nod.

His gaze lingered on my face for a long moment before he finally left me in my room alone.

I let out a long breath, dropping my purse on the foot of the bed so I could find my phone quickly. It was vibrating when I picked it up, and I couldn’t stop myself from grimacing when I saw my mom’s old face smiling back from the screen. She hadn’t looked like that since her last three surgeries.

Avoiding her wasn’t going to do me any good, so I hit the button and lifted the phone to my ear. “Hey, mom.”

“Why is a member of the supernatural government calling me to say my daughter is married to her son?” Her voice was so loud, I had to jerk the phone away from my ear. I could still hear fine with it six inches away from my face.

Our situation seemed to get messier by the hour.

“I’m doing great, thanks for asking. How are you?”

“Tatum Renee, this is not the time for jokes! What kind of supernatural is he? Why haven’t you told me anything about him? Why didn’t I get an invitation to the wedding?!”

“Easy, mom. He’s a good guy, and that’s what matters.” I closed my eyes, leaning against the wall.

Ultimately, Ididbelieve it was true.

As much as I was trying to convince myself that he was dangerous, I knew the difference between taking out vampires who were killing humans, and murdering someone in cold blood.

And I always tried to lie as little as possible. Lying wasn’t one of my talents on a good day, and it wasn’t a good day. The ache in my lower belly hadn’t dissipated any more than the obnoxious dampness in my panties. I needed to have a conversation with Rafael about where we were going to live, and with my roommates about me possibly moving out, and…

Yeah.

It was a lot.
