“That’s none of your business.” Annoyance had me silencing my phone before tucking it in the pocket of my jeans. “Answer my questions, and I’ll consider going with you.” After a short pause, I added quickly, “Assuming I agree that I need to. Also, you have to pay for those.”

“Mates can’t be apart for the first few years after the bond is formed. Distance leads to psychosis.”

Well, that was just fantastic.

“How do weunmate, then?”

“We don’t. A sealed mate bond is unbreakable.”

Silence reigned in the shop.

I glanced backward, and did a double-take when I saw Sophie standing still with a peaceful look on her face. “What did you do to her?” My voice was sharp, and worried. “Undo it.”

“I just got out ofprison, Tater-tot. I’ve been starving for months. I can’t control my drain on anyone’s emotions when I’m this hungry, which is why I’m trying to get you out of this damn coffee shop.”

Shit.

I was going to have to go with him.

Letting out a long breath, I finally untied my apron.

“Donotcall me that again. I’ll go with you to my apartment, so we can talk away from everyone else.”

“I need my clothes, woman. And money, if you want me to pay you.” He lifted the box of candy.

“I’m not going to your house.” I hung my apron up and grabbed my purse. After tucking my newest recipe card in the bag, I threw it over my shoulder and strode toward the door. “And I’m driving.”

“Good. I rode here on a dragon.”

I bit back a snort.

It was definitely the wrong situation for a joke.

I’d been mated to a demon who hadn’t answered any important questions—one who just escaped prison.

And he was hungry for candy, and lust.

Hell, maybe itwasthe time for a joke.

The demon folded his massive, muscular body into my reliable SUV with surprising ease.

But wow, the vehicle felt much smaller with him in the passenger seat. If I moved to the side more than an inch or two, my shoulder would hit his.

Yikes.

I started my car and began driving.

On second thought, taking him back to my apartment was probably a terrible idea. I didn’t want him to know where I lived, or what my place looked like.

Then again, it was a worse idea to let him take me to his home—wherever it was—because he would have more control there.

Anywhere public was out because of his magic, so my apartment was the best of the bad options.

“Can I borrow your phone?” he asked me, eating his way through the stolen candies like he was starving. His eyes were glowing, so maybe he was.
