He was quiet for a moment.

I thought maybe he felt guilty, but when I looked over, I found him wearing an orgasmic-expression while enjoying my take on peanut butter cups.

Bastard.

“You’re human,” Rafael finally said. “Or you were, anyway. Have you heard of potential mates?”

“No.”

“Supernatural beings can’t just choose anyone out of a crowd to spend their life with, like humans can. We have a handful of potential mates that we come in contact with through our lives. Most demons move to a new city or country when a pull to a new potential mate begins, because we’re not usually interested in taking mates. It’s a sign that our magic has found someone else’s it’s compatible with, and nothing more.”

I blinked. “I’m human. I don’t have magic.”

“Humans are powerful in their own ways. Some are skilled with words, or paint. Others are great speakers, good friends, or loving parents. There are many forms of magic—and all are worth protecting.”

His gaze was on the box in his hands as he pulled out another candy.

I tried not to look at him with surprise, because he’d shocked the hell out of me with that last comment.

“And anyway, you’re not human anymore. You’re bound to me, so you’re a demon. You’ll need to feed like I do, or you’ll start losing control.”

Just like that, I was back to hating him. “What? I thought supernaturals were born, not made?”

He chuckled. “That’s a lie spread to stop humans from hunting us down to become like us.”

Great.

That was justgreat.

“How do you turn someone into a demon, then?”

“Demons can only be made through mating. All it takes to create a vampire, though, is to drain a human with a few drops of vampire blood in their system. They’re the easiest to turn.”

“And the hardest to control?” Even I had heard about vampire attacks in the past. They were rare, but they did happen.

“Exactly.”

We parked in front of my apartment, and Rafael lifted a critical eye to the building. The fourplex was small and simple, but the landscaping was kept up with for the most part. “Not much for security, are you?”

I wanted to punch him in the face.

I really, really did.

While it was nothing fancy, it was cheap enough that when we moved in, my roommates and I could pay off our business and education debts quickly. The last of us had paid off the final chunk of debt a few months earlier, and we had celebrated by going on a trip to Hawaii. It had been a blast, and it felt good to be free that way.

We still didn’t want to pay for a nicer apartment, though. I was saving up for a house, Miles was investing, and Brynn wasn’t sure what she was stockpiling money for.

“Not all of us get paid the big bucks to murder supernaturals,” I shot back, unbuckling my seatbelt and stepping out of the car. Rafael followed me up to my door, which was on the bottom floor of the complex. He carried his now-empty box of candy with him.

I unlocked the door and stepped inside. My roommates and I kept the place clean, and while it wasn’t anything fancy, we’d decorated it with the same laid-back, boho vibes we decorated our coffee shops with.

There was another box of candy on the countertop, so of course, Rafael went right for it.

“How can you eat that much chocolate? Don’t demons drink lust?” I asked him. Despite everything, I no longer felt like I was in danger with him.

I was just very, very annoyed.

And maybe a little hateful.
