Triple fucking fuck. He’d abandoned his unasked-for bodyguard. There was no way the big man hadn’t figured out that André had not waited in the parking lot. Which meant that Dante would also know. No. He wasn’t going to stop. He’d text Dante when he figured out what his next steps would be.

Carol cleared her throat, the sound loud and intrusive.

“Your, em, friends are waiting here for you. Should I put them in the breakroom?”

Dammit.

“I’ll be there in three minutes.”

“Again?” Dante shouted. “You were shot at again?!”

André had parked the cruiser behind the station. In the darkness, no one would see the damage. Not right away. That was before he saw the dark figure waiting by the back entrance to the station.

“Yes. And they missed again,” André replied, keeping his voice calm. He did not feel calm.

“They didn’t miss,” Dante hissed. “They took out your fucking goddamned windshield.”

Dante had not been waiting in the breakroom, he’d been lurking outside. Looming. Furious.

And André knew he had every right to be angry.

“Look,Iknow.Iwas there. I’m going to alert the Grays County Sheriff’s Office.”

“And what the fuck are they going to do?” Dante demanded.

Honestly, the departments were all so short-staffed that André didn’t have a clue what anyone could do, but he’d follow protocol.

“Deputy Cooper and I will head back up tomorrow and do a check on Evison’s property. Carol said that his daughter-in-law told her Murry is in Arizona, so at least it wasn’t him shooting at me.” And the crotchety old man wasn’t decomposing in his home.

“The fuck you will.”

“The fuck I will,” André growled. “I am not hiding somewhere and letting other people do my job.”

They were chest to chest for the second time that day. This time, André wanted to wrap his fingers around Dante’s neck instead of his cock. Or maybe both.

“How about you two go somewhere and fuck this out?” Morrison suggested.

André and Dante spun around to shoot death glares at the big man. They’d been so intent on each other that instead of focusing on the real matter at hand, neither had noticed Morrison opening the back door and stepping outside.

“What?”

“Excuse me?”

Morrison shrugged, not remotely phased. “Just stating the obvious. Maybe after that’s out of your systems, we can focus on keeping the chief alive?” This time, his pointed stare was directed at Dante.

André clenched his jaw. Dante crossed his arms over his chest.

“No idea who could be taking shots at you?” Dante asked André, very much ignoring Morrison.

“I cannot imagine who in Cooper Springs I’ve pissed off enough that they want to kill me.”

A rumbling sound came from Dante’s chest. Making a partial fist, he began cracking his knuckles.

“Maybe,” Morrison said with a pronounced drawl, “you boys should take this inside? If you’re not going to fuck it out, I mean.”

“We are not fucking anything out,” Dante growled.

“This is serious, then?” Morrison waved his hand between the two of them. “That explains so much.” He turned and led the way back.
