She held the card between two fingers as if it was something disgusting, not merely a piece of cardstock.

Turning away, he took the three steps to the yard and the door shut behind him with an audible bang. The space between his shoulder blades twitched, and André moved faster. He didn’t like having his back to Trent’s home.

“Let’s go.”

“Ten-four,” Dante said, opening the passenger door and climbing inside.

André flipped on the windshield wipers and pulled the car out into the street. There wasn’t much traffic, but then there never was in Cooper Springs. Traffic was one of those things that happened somewhere else.

“How long are you and Deputy Cooper going to have to share a cruiser?” Dante asked.

“Fucking hell.” André slammed his hand against the steering wheel. “I haven’t brought the mayor up to date.” He hadn’t seen or spoken with Roslyn Moore since the news conference—yesterday? The day before? Fucking hell.

“There’s been a lot going on. I’m sure she’ll understand.”

“I fucking hope so.”

EIGHTEEN

Dante

Understandably frustrated, André stomped back to his office to call the mayor as soon as they arrived back at the station. Dante said hi to Carol before wandering back to the breakroom where Dani was playing a card game with Lani. Luna hopped up to greet him with a tongue swipe and cold nose.

“I don’t have anything for you,” he informed the dog.

“Hi, Zio,” Dani said, not looking up from her hand.

“Hey, topolina, how’s it going?”

“I’m pretty sure you know how it’s going.”

“Yeah, I do,” he replied, squeezing her shoulder. “With any luck, this is going to be over soon.” His chest throbbed, a constant reminder that they were still smack in the middle of the shitstorm, but he couldn’t sit at the station and do nothing. That was not how Dante Castone operated.

“I hope we have a lot of luck.” Dani stared at her cards before laying down a five of spades.

Lani laid her cards down on the table with a sigh. “You win again. This is not good for my ego.” She looked over at Dante standing in the doorway. “I want to take a drive around the neighborhood. The fact that we still haven’t caught up with the second perp from last night is troubling.”

The perp that got away bothered Dante a lot. He, or she, seemed to have vanished into thin air. No one Lani had talked to during her canvas of the neighborhood had seen or heard anything—they’d all been distracted by the flaming Honda. Thank you very much, Morrison.

“They could have had a car stashed somewhere.”

“Yup, and in that case, they might be long gone. I’m still going to take a drive around town.” Lani stood up from the table. “They could be hiding out.”

“How about I ride along with you?” Dante offered.

Dani would be safe with André in the building.

“Are you okay with me going out again?” he asked his niece.

She looked up from where she was laying out a hand of solitaire. “Yeah. I just want this to be over, Zio. I’d also really appreciate it if you didn’t get shot this time.”

Daniella looked and sounded so much like Simone that it made Dante’s heart ache. He missed his sister with an almost overwhelming ferocity. He didn’t plan on letting Dani down. If anyone was going to be shooting anyone, it would be Dante aiming at the asshole who was after them.

“I’ll do my best, topolina. Well?” He directed that to Deputy Cooper.

“Sure. Run it past the boss first though. And wear a vest.”

Dante tapped lightly on André’s office door before pushing it open.
