With a kitchen knife. Black hilt, silver blade. Such a simple utensil.

And now I can’t help thinking I was right all along. That the person after me is him. That he’s going to kill me slowly, painfully, like that person he just drained of blood.

Why did I believe him when he said he wouldn’t hurt me? Why did I believe Elliot when he said Ethan wasn’t the one wanting me dead? They’ve been out to get me since the beginning.

I escape whoever’s hand is trying to grab me by a millisecond. Running out, I trip over my feet, only catching myself on my car parked right outside.

I don’t have the keys, so I run.

“Ethan, come back here, you crazy motherfucker!”

Elliot is pissed. Probably because his brother is running after me down the street, covered in blood.

I’m too small. My legs can’t run nearly as fast as Ethan’s. I know it’s over before I even feel his hand closing on the back of my t-shirt.

“No!” I cry out as he drags me back and slams me against the nearest random parked car. It’s freezing. The car still covered with morning frost that burns my cheek.

“Shh,” he hisses in my ear. “Don’t be scared, baby.” As his face presses against the side of mine, I can feel the disgusting thickness of blood, smell the copper scent of it.

I slept next to this man all week. I feltsafenext to him.

I whimper when I feel the knife at my throat. “Don’t be scared,” he repeats with a voice I’ve never heard from him.

It’s an empty rasp. Void of any emotion. From a man I’ve always known as full of feelings, I can’t identify this side of him.

“Please, let me go. Let me go, let me—”

“Shh.” His other hand comes to caress my hairline. “I won’t hurt you. I would never hurt you. I promise.”

I’m shaking to the point that my skin presses harder against the knife, despite him making no movement.

“Please,” I squeak. The fear makes me feel sick. The smell of blood causes bile to rise up my throat.

“I’m going to bring you home, and we’ll talk. No need to run, no need to be scared. I swear, Jade… I wouldneverhurt you.”

The weight of his body disappears quickly, forcibly. The blade accidentally cuts me just above Elliot’s collar.

“Get off her, you fucking psychopath. Do you want us all to go to prison?” He pushes Ethan in front of himself. “Walk, asshole.”

Ethan looks at me, life finally coming back to his black eyes. He turns and walks toward the house.

“Hey.” Elliot wraps an arm around my shoulders. “It’s okay.”

“It’s him.” I say it with such conviction, Elliot’s eyebrows rise.

“No, I told you it wasn’t him who was threatening you.”

“It’s him.”

He looks like he doesn’t want to say it, but he says it anyway. “He wouldn’t hurt you, Jade. Believe me, the way he is right now…he’s always been like that. It’s got nothing to do with you.”

Still, the shaking doesn’t stop.

“W-wh—” It’s hard to formulate any words through my clattering teeth. “What happened?”

He observes the state I’m in, his jaw tightening. “We’ll explain everything. At home. Come, my love.”

We walk close to Ethan while staying behind. He keeps looking back at us. At me. My eyes won’t leave that bloody knife.
